Danny Gokey is sharing a patriotic message alongside 2023 song, “My America (I Still Believe).”
“God told me to write a song for our country,” he shared in a recent Instagram video. “Now I know this sounds weird, but stick with me here. God sometimes likes to interrupt our plans, and I originally was just going to cover patriotic songs that we all know and love. But as I went to go do that, God spoke to me and said, ‘No, I have a song for you’ that He wanted me to write. And honestly, I felt unqualified. I felt like, ‘How could I ever write a song that would have any significance or meaning?’ But it wasn’t about me. It was about Him, about His plan.”
The AMERICAN IDOL alum continued, “You know, people used to be ‘proud to be an American,’ but that seems like something that has been lost. But when I set to write this song out, what I sensed is that God’s not done with America.”
“Here’s what I’ve learned,” Gokey said. “You can’t condemn America into a better place. You have to celebrate it. There are good things about America. You can’t hate it into a better place, you have to love it. You can’t despise it, you have to believe it. I still believe in America. Do you believe in America? I know God’s not done…this is my America, and I still believe in us.”

The lyrics to “My America (I Still Believe)” include lines like, “Our history is full of bravery // Heroes fought for our equality // Now is the time to make peace and forgive our faults // Because united we stand or divided we will fall,” per MusixMatch.
“I still believe in us, my America,” Gokey sings. “You′re still the land I love, though a little bruised up….Blood poured out for our freedom // Sacrificed it all for this nation // I still believe in us.”
In a 2023 interview with Faithwire, the singer shared, “It is OK to love your country. As a matter of fact, you probably should love your country. Otherwise, your country won’t be very strong if the people don’t love it.”
“There’s never been a country like us — and probably will never be like a country like us,” he said. “So, I wanted to just point people to the hope of our country, to the bravery of our country, to the goodness of the land.”
Gokey’s song is the perfect soundtrack as we continue to celebrate our nation’s 250th anniversary.
