On this Independence Day, Danny Gokey wants Americans to remember that they are free because of the men and women who have sacrificed their lives to make our country what it is today.

🇺🇸 America 🇺🇸 Still the land that I love ❤️🤍💙. Remembering those who gave their lives, and grateful for the freedoms we enjoy ~ There is still so much to celebrate! 🙌” Gokey wrote on an Instagram post where he shared his cover of Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the USA.”

The cover is a part of a three song EP Gokey released in 2023 to celebrate our country. The other two songs on the album were originals — “Brave” and “My America” — which further celebrate the singer’s love for his country.

“It is OK to love your country,” Gokey said. “As a matter of fact, you probably should love your country. Otherwise, your country won’t be very strong if the people don’t love it.”

“There’s never been a country like us — and probably will never be a country like us,” the AMERICAN IDOL alum added. “So, I wanted to just point people to the hope of our country, to the bravery of our country, to the goodness of the land.”

Gokey hopes that these songs and an overall sentiment of love and pride for America will help combat the increasingly popular narrative that America is an evil place. Our country’s past wrongs do not mean that it is a bad or evil place to live. Furthermore, rather than only emphasize our history’s negatives, Americans should also embrace the positives and understand just how much good we have brought into this world.

“When I wrote these songs, I took a magnifying glass and put it over the good things in our country in order to move out the negative and put the positive view in it,” Gokey said.

“Begin to be part of the solution, not part of the problem,” he added. “A lot of times, there’s so much noise that we allow people to think for us. For the young generation, don’t allow others to think for you. Learn to think for yourself, and learn to think truth and not an emotion and not in anything else that can be misleading.”

As we celebrate our Independence Day this July 4, we should all take the time to reflect on what freedom means to us and share our gratitude for the people throughout our nation’s history who has made those freedoms available today.
