Tattoo artist Kat Von D just celebrated almost two decades of sobriety.

“19 years, you guys. Today, I am celebrating 19 years of sobriety, and it is amazing,” she said in an Instagram video. “I definitely am not looking for a pat on the back, because I feel like you shouldn’t get extra credit for doing your homework, but I will say that this post is for anybody out there who is struggling right now. If someone like me can overcome drug addiction and alcohol addiction, you most definitely can, too. And I hope you’ll celebrate this sober anniversary with me today. I love you guys.”

Von D has been open about her sobriety journey, explaining in an episode of the “Relatable” podcast that she “was a full-blown alcoholic” by the time she was 20.

“I was drinking all the time. I got introduced to drugs at that point, but I was functioning so, like, somehow, I miraculously showed up to work every day and I did a great job, but behind that was just this growing addiction,” she said.

Von D ended up getting sober but got involved in “new age stuff” like meditation and self-help books, which she called “very short-lived band-aids.”

“I’ve been sober for a long time, but I don’t feel like I was free from all of it until I found God,” she added.

The tattoo artist was baptized in 2023, and has been vocal about the positive changes faith has made in her life. Von D has also spoken about rejecting the occult practices she had previously been interested in.

“I don’t want these crutches in my life anymore, and that’s what really I saw them as,” she said in a 2023 interview. “I  just want Jesus, and it’s a very narrow road. I feel like all these other, these breathing techniques, or spell work, nature worship, all these things, they’re just crutches. They’re not really my answer.”

Von D, who was raised as a Christian, continued, “I think I was very lucky I had parents that were Christian. I do credit my dad for everything because I remember finding myself in very dark moments and intuitively I was praying. And it wasn’t because my dad made me, because He’d been waiting, that’s all.”

“When you can fall in love and learn as an adult, it’s so much more meaningful and real than it is when you’re a child just doing it because this is what we do. And this is how we do it,” she said.

Von D’s followers are happy to hear she is still thriving in her sobriety.
