Director Jon Erwin believes that YOUNG WASHINGTON can unite the nation.
“Just what we really tried to do with YOUNG WASHINGTON, we talk about this sentence of ‘Stories that restore faith and things worth believing in.’ America, while imperfect, is one of those things, and it’s worth believing in,” the director said on Mike Rowe’s “The Way I Heard It” podcast.
“We have way more that unites us than divides us, and we’ve just lost sight of it. And my hope is that the movie will be one of those things that could be an agent of getting us to love the ethos of our country together,” Erwin added.
Focusing on Washington’s early life allowed Erwin to explore what experiences “forged” the nation’s first president.
“I wanted to do the young life of George Washington because I was much more interested in, like, where was this myth carved in granite forged? The most defining attribute, I think, to Washington, that I wanted to point out in the film is here’s a guy that, through this first set of adventures in his life, realized that it kind of wasn’t about him,” he explained.
“He wants to be weighed and measured. This guy realized that, ‘Oh, leadership is to actually serve, to serve the people you’re entrusted with and to serve an idea that is so much bigger than you. That in service to that idea, you become the embodiment of the idea itself,'” the director continued.
Other celebs promoted YOUNG WASHINGTON, including actor Chris Pratt.
“Celebrate America’s 250th birthday at the box office!!! There’s a lot of great choices this weekend. But considering it’s July 4 weekend, I humbly suggest YOUNG WASHINGTON,” the actor wrote on Instagram. “I was actually blown away. The movie is incredible. Like BRAVEHEART for Americans. Jon Erwin crushed it. William Franklin Miller did a great job as young Washington. Remember the name! A star is born! The movie is awesome! Way to go!!”
Movieguide® praised YOUNG WASHINGTON, calling it “superb” and “one of the best, most gripping biographical and historical war movies ever made.”
“YOUNG WASHINGTON has a strong moral, patriotic worldview,” Movieguide®’s review says. “It stresses justice and fairness. The movie presents George Washington as an ambitious man. However, George learns, during three famous battles depicted by the movie, that there’s more to becoming a true leader of men than just pursuing personal wealth and recognition. Caution is advised for older children.”
If you’re looking for a way to celebrate America, YOUNG WASHINGTON promises to be an inspiring, unifying cinematic experience.
