SPIDER-MAN: BEYOND THE SPIDER-VERSE remains on track for its 2027 theatrical release, and producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller say the team is working through one of its biggest technical challenges.

“We are deep, deep in it,” Miller told Empire, according to SuperHeroHype.

The update gives fans a clearer picture of why the third chapter in Sony’s animated SPIDER-VERSE series has taken so long to complete. Lord and Miller said the creative team is mastering portions of the movie for IMAX’s expanded 1.43:1 aspect ratio, which demands more visual information than a standard presentation.

“We’re actually going today to the IMAX headquarters to see what the footage looks like at scale, and make sure that it has the resolution that it needs to look gorgeous,” Miller said.

Miller added that the team is “chugging away in the edit room” and that the movie is “coming together really well.” He also admitted the scope remains daunting, calling it “a lot of movie, and a lot to do.”

Lord said the artists want the movie’s visual detail to hold up on the biggest possible screen. That ambition fits a franchise that built much of its reputation on inventive animation, comic-book textures and kinetic images that pushed superhero storytelling in a fresh direction.

SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE introduced audiences to Miles Morales and won the Academy Award for best animated feature. SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE expanded the multiverse story in 2023 and ended with a cliffhanger that left viewers waiting for the final installment.

Movieguide® praised SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE for strong moral themes, including courage, mentorship, sacrifice and family love. Those qualities helped the movie stand out in a crowded superhero landscape because its visual style served a heartfelt coming-of-age story.

The new update suggests Lord, Miller and the animation team still want spectacle to serve the story rather than replace it. Miller summed up the challenge bluntly: “You got to keep doing something that hasn’t been done before.”

The IMAX work also shows how seriously the filmmakers are taking theatrical presentation at a time when many families wait for streaming. A movie built for a giant screen can make the trip to the theater feel meaningful, provided the story gives viewers more than visual fireworks.

That question has always mattered for superhero stories. Bright colors and clever action can entertain, but the lasting value comes when the hero learns responsibility, receives wisdom and chooses courage when escape would be easier.

For Miles Morales, that emotional core has remained essential. The character’s appeal rests not only in his powers, but in his struggle to honor family, friendship and calling while a chaotic world keeps pulling him in different directions.

Sony currently plans to release SPIDER-MAN: BEYOND THE SPIDER-VERSE in theaters on June 28, 2027. Families who appreciated the earlier movies will still want to wait for full content details, but the latest production update points to a team trying to finish the series with care rather than rushing it across the finish line.
