If you’re worried about Netflix’s LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE reboot, showrunner Rebecca Sonnenshine is here to reassure you.

“I want people to know, first of all, everybody making this show cares about the books and bringing it to life and being as authentic as we can and bringing all those details to life that people love,” she told PEOPLE. “Everyone cares so much.”

Sonnenshine explained that the Little House books “really shaped my worldview as a person and an artist, that a female author wrote the most important books in my life about a female character that made me feel like I could do anything.”

“I think it’ll bring both people who love the show, that already know they love this property, they already love LITTLE HOUSE, but I also think that it will introduce LITTLE HOUSE to a whole new group of people.”

Joy Gorman Wettels, the show’s executive producer, made similar comments in an interview with CBS. She shared that she rediscovered Laura Ingalls Wilder’s books while rereading them with her family during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Wettels acknowledged that many might worry about what a modern take on LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE might look like, but shared, “I knew that there would be controversy around how this is done. I just think that it doesn’t help us to look back and erase the literature, or erase the mistakes. It helps us to look at them through a new lens in a way that welcomes new readers and welcomes new viewers.”

Actor Warren Christie, who plays Ingalls family neighbor John Edwards, told Fox News, “If you’re a true fan of a book, we did everything we could to make sure that that storytelling was told in the right way. I think it was never lost on any of us how special it was to be a part of this world and this universe. It’s huge, and it means a lot to people. And, so, we’re very proud of the show.”

He added that he hopes the series will be something the whole family can watch together.

“I hope, at the end of the day, what we’ve done is created a really exciting world that multiple generations can share and enjoy together. And it’s the underlying thing of the whole show, which is community,” Christie concluded.

LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE premieres on Netflix July 9.
