According to TVLine, SUPERMAN Director James Gunn has his eye on a couple of spinoffs, each centered around one of the movie’s characters — Mister Terrific and Jimmy Olsen.
Jimmy Olsen is a young reporter and photographer from The Daily Planet — he’s a little awkward but in an endearing way, Rolling Stone assesses. He has several comic book appearances, and his name even titles a few of them. Mister Terrific is a super smart character with the ability to control T-spheres that make him invincible to technology. Edi Gathegi plays Mister Terrific in the new David Corenswet-lead movie, and Skyler Gisondo plays Olsen.
Gunn, DC Studios CEO and his co-CEO, Peter Saffran, announced their plan to have two live-action flicks and one animated movie each year, as well as two live-action series and two animated series each year.
On May 22 Gunn said, “I’m about to wrap PEACEMAKER. LANTERNS is halfway through filming. We’re going to see early episodes of that soon.”
LANTERNS, which stars Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre, is set to premiere sometime next year, Deadline reported.
His Wonder Woman-adjacent series, PARADISE LOST, is coming along slowly.
“Then there’s another TV show that’s my favorite thing in all of this, that is hopefully getting made soon” but “has not been announced at all,” he hinted.
He said PEACEMAKER’s second season is an important part of the new DCU’s first chapter, which they’re calling “Gods and Monsters.
“I wouldn’t say CREATURE COMMANDOS [is] important, but PEACEMAKER and SUPERMAN are both pretty important in terms of getting to the bigger story,” he said.
SUPERMAN made over $22 million at the box office and has a 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes following its release last weekend.
Part of Movieguide®’s review reads, “Writer/Director James Gunn packs SUPERMAN with lots of exciting physical and emotional jeopardy. The movie also has some funny moments. Also, some heartfelt content is morally uplifting.”
“However, the movie changes Superman’s origin story in a significant way that destroys the original story’s biblical allusions to Moses and Jesus,” the review continues. “Also, it creates a politically correct pro-immigration theme. Ironically, the movie contradicts this by showing that it’s Superman’s American, non-immigrant parents who make Superman a good guy.”
The next James Gunn project is PEACEMAKER Season 2, which comes out Aug. 21, Comic Book Movie reported. The story follows John Cena’s vigilante superhero, Chris Smith, as he reconciles his past with purpose, bagging a few bad guys on the way.
