CURSED

"I Was a Teenage Werewolf, Again"

What You Need To Know:

CURSED is another teen horror ride from the makers of SCREAM and television’s DAWSON’S CREEK. Christina Ricci’s character works at a late night TV show and takes care of her younger brother. After a mysterious creature bites both of them, they begin to feel very strange. The brother does some research and believes that they are turning into werewolves. They have to unravel the mystery of why the monster targeted them and how they can undo the curse. Fortunately, the director approaches this material with a sense of humor. The movie’s tone is light and occasionally self-mocking and elevates the movie from unwatchable silliness to entertaining fluff.

CURSED suffers from a pagan occult worldview, which is to be expected from a werewolf movie but is still confusing and inexcusable. The violence is only moderate, but there is some rear male nudity that is unacceptable. One of the high school students – the wrestling team captain – outs himself as gay, then there is some pablum about accepting everyone and their differences. Although it is lighter and less offensive than many of the horror movies in theaters this winter, CURSED still earns an abhorrent rating from MOVIEGUIDE®.

Content:

(PaPa, OO, PC, Ho, LLL, VV, S, NN, A, M) Strong pagan worldview about people who turn into werewolves, occult knowledge and fortune telling solve plot problems, and some politically correct references to homosexuality plus some content about learning to “accept” everyone and their differences; 24 obscenities with some ‘f’ words and six profanities; some fantasy violence with werewolves chasing and slashing people, car wreck, dog turns into werewolf and tears up house, people stampede out of party, and woman punches and throws people; a sexual reference, kissing and a teenage boy tries to kiss another boy; rear male nudity in a comedic context, plus female cleavage; alcohol use; and, jealousy and revenge.

More Detail:

CURSED is another teen horror ride from the makers of SCREAM and television’s DAWSON’S CREEK. Christina Ricci’s character works at a late night TV show and takes care of her younger brother, played by Jesse Eisenberg. After a mysterious creature bites both of them, they find new abilities and begin to feel very strange. The brother does some research and believes that they are turning into werewolves. Once they learn that a werewolf is wreaking havoc on Los Angeles’s hip party scene, they have to unravel the mystery of why the werewolf targeted them and how they can undo the curse.

Fortunately, writer Kevin Williamson and director Wes Craven approach this material with a sense of humor, cynical though it is. The movie’s tone is light and occasionally self-mocking, most notably during the high school dialogue. A lighter approach elevates the movie from unwatchable silliness to entertaining fluff.

CURSED suffers from a pagan occult worldview, which is to be expected from a werewolf movie but is still confusing and inexcusable. The violence is only moderate, but there is some rear male nudity (in a comedic context) that would be especially inappropriate for younger teenagers. One of the high school students – the wrestling team captain – outs himself as homosexual and hits on Eisenberg’s character. There is also some pablum about accepting everyone and their differences.

Although it is lighter and less offensive than many of the horror movies in theaters this winter, CURSED still earns an abhorrent rating from MOVIEGUIDE®.
