After tearing up the box office since its release at the beginning of July, SUPERMAN is now available to rent or buy across digital platforms like Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV and Fandango at Home.
“Well, it’s very complicated, but the truth is it is because of PEACEMAKER,” director James Gunn told Deadline when discussing the quick turnaround to digital. “I originally thought PEACEMAKER was going to be coming out next month. There was a lot of things that are beyond our control, so that PEACEMAKER is coming out now, and, at the end of the day, I wanted everyone to be able to see SUPERMAN that wanted to, even those people who couldn’t get to a theater before PEACEMAKER. And that’s really the reason for it.”
SUPERMAN has successfully relaunched the DC cinematic universe after it slumped behind the MCU for over a decade. However, as the MCU continues to lose its popularity, DC has taken it upon itself to reignite the superhero genre through some of the most recognizable characters, like Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman.
“Three years ago, I hired James Gunn and Peter Safran to reimagine and unify the creative direction of DC under one leadership team, by breathing new life and excitement into one of the most iconic storytelling franchises in the world,” said Warner Bros. Discovery – DC’s parent company – CEO David Zaslav after SUPERMAN hit theaters. “James and Peter’s commitment to honoring the legacy of the DC Universe while forging something new and enthralling is inspiring.”
“Over the next year alone, DC Studios will introduce the films SUPERGIRL and CLAYFACE in theaters and the series LANTERNS on HBO Max, all part of a bold 10-year plan,” Zaslav added. “The DC vision is clear, the momentum is real, and I couldn’t be more excited for what’s ahead.”

Many fans share a similar sentiment, especially as SUPERMAN packs a heartwarming, morally uplifting story into a movie that could have played out all too familiarly. A portion of Movieguide®’s review reads:
Writer/Director James Gunn packs SUPERMAN with lots of exciting physical and emotional jeopardy. The movie also has some funny moments. Also, some heartfelt content is morally uplifting. However, the movie changes Superman’s origin story in a significant way that destroys the original story’s biblical allusions to Moses and Jesus. Also, it creates a politically correct pro-immigration theme. Ironically, the movie contradicts this by showing that it’s Superman’s American, non-immigrant parents who make Superman a good guy. SUPERMAN has scary action violence, multiple obscenities and two gratuitous strong profanities.
At the same time, Gunn shared that fans should not expect every movie to be the same as SUPERMAN. Rather than having a “DC style,” he will allow every director to put their own spin on the stories they helm.
“CLAYFACE is a totally different thing,” Gunn said about the upcoming movie. “Although it’s in the same universe it’s a complete horror film, and that’s one of the things we want to do. There’s not a company style. It’s not like every movie is gonna be like SUPERMAN. The artists and the directors and the writers that create each one will bring their own sense to it…We don’t want people to get bored.”
As many people have moved on from Marvel, it is exciting to see how DC is approaching the multi-movie epic in a new way that makes it feel fresh for audiences again.
