What You Need To Know:
GINGER & ROSA shows a very broken world. There’s also a constant battle between Rosa’s Catholic faith and the atheism of Ginger’s father. Ultimately, everyone chooses to do what they emotionally want to do, though the movie shows the destruction in this as well. Ginger is sweet and joyous, but the affair between her father and Rosa makes her depressed. Elle Fanning does the best acting job in the whole movie playing Ginger. All and all, GINGER & ROSA is slow and sad.
(HH, AbAb, PCPC, PaPa, Ro, C, L, V, SS, A, D, MMM) Strong humanist, Anti-Christian, depressing worldview, with some mixed politically correct, pagan, and Romantic elements, though one of the young title teenage characters is Catholic and tries to influence the others, another is atheist and tries to refute Christianity while saying God and the afterlife is made up, church scene, character gives another a cross and talks about praying, but in the end the older atheist seduces the teenager to start an affair, and she gets pregnant; three obscenities, one strong profanity, one light profanity; violence includes attempted suicide by pills and a woman slaps a man; strong sexual immorality includes implied adulterous fornication with a minor, minor gets pregnant, and young teenagers kiss; no nudity but teenage girls shown in underwear; no alcohol use; smoking, including minors smoking; and, dysfunctional family structure as one father leaves his family, parents separate, father is constantly having affairs with young women, father is a pacifist revolutionary, girl has wrong view of the Hiroshima bomb and gets involved in anti-nuclear protests, women giving birth.
Ginger and Rosa are best friends in 1960s London who do and tell each other everything, until their worlds get jumbled during the Cuban Missile Crisis in GINGER & ROSA. GINGER & ROSA is a depressing story with a strong humanist worldview of a sweet young girl in a destructive world.
Ginger is a teenager growing up with her best friend, Rosa. Doing everything together, they can’t be separated. Both born at the same time to two women who were also best friends, they’ve never known life apart from each other. However, both girls come from broken homes. Ginger’s mother and father are constantly fighting and separating, while Rosa’s father left when she was a young girl. Rosa seems to be the one who really wants to grow up, and entices Ginger to kiss boys, smoke cigarettes and hitchhike.
Rosa, Ginger’s best friend, is a Catholic who gives Ginger a cross and takes her to church. Ginger’s father, however, is an atheist who refutes Rosa’s beliefs. Taking an interest in Ginger’s father, Rosa starts to have an affair with him. This slowly tears Ginger apart.
Trying to find her own passions in life, Ginger decides to boycott the bombing of Hiroshima. Going to meetings and constantly talking about the potential end of the world due to the bomb, Ginger tries to distract herself from the truth of the separation of her parents and Rosa changing.
GINGER & ROSA has a mixed worldview, with a constant battle between Rosa’s Catholicism and her best friend’s father’s atheism. All and all, everyone chooses to do what they emotionally want to do, though the movie shows the destruction in this as well. Ginger is sweet and joyous, but the bad decisions of the people around her, especially Rosa and her father, cause her to go into depression. The movie shows a very broken world.
Elle Fanning as Ginger does some extraordinary acting playing Ginger. The parents, Alessandro Nivola and Christina Hendricks, need some work, as they seem as if they are just mouthing retorts.
All and all, GINGER & ROSA is slow and sad. It’s another movie showing an older man taking advantage of the emotions of a young girl.
