What You Need To Know:

GINGER & ROSA is a drama about two girls from broken homes who are friends. Ginger is growing up in a dysfunctional family with her best friend, Rosa. Both were born at the same time to two women who also were best friends. They’ve never known life apart from each other. Ginger’s mother and father are constantly fighting and separating, while Rosa’s father left when she was young. Rosa really wants to grow up. She entices Ginger to kiss boys, smoke cigarettes and hitchhike. When Rosa and Ginger’s father begin an affair, Ginger is torn apart.

GINGER & ROSA shows a very broken world. There’s also a constant battle between Rosa’s Catholic faith and the atheism of Ginger’s father. Ultimately, everyone chooses to do what they emotionally want to do, though the movie shows the destruction in this as well. Ginger is sweet and joyous, but the affair between her father and Rosa makes her depressed. Elle Fanning does the best acting job in the whole movie playing Ginger. All and all, GINGER & ROSA is slow and sad.

More Detail:

Ginger and Rosa are best friends in 1960s London who do and tell each other everything, until their worlds get jumbled during the Cuban Missile Crisis in GINGER & ROSA. GINGER & ROSA is a depressing story with a strong humanist worldview of a sweet young girl in a destructive world.

Ginger is a teenager growing up with her best friend, Rosa. Doing everything together, they can’t be separated. Both born at the same time to two women who were also best friends, they’ve never known life apart from each other. However, both girls come from broken homes. Ginger’s mother and father are constantly fighting and separating, while Rosa’s father left when she was a young girl. Rosa seems to be the one who really wants to grow up, and entices Ginger to kiss boys, smoke cigarettes and hitchhike.

Rosa, Ginger’s best friend, is a Catholic who gives Ginger a cross and takes her to church. Ginger’s father, however, is an atheist who refutes Rosa’s beliefs. Taking an interest in Ginger’s father, Rosa starts to have an affair with him. This slowly tears Ginger apart.

Trying to find her own passions in life, Ginger decides to boycott the bombing of Hiroshima. Going to meetings and constantly talking about the potential end of the world due to the bomb, Ginger tries to distract herself from the truth of the separation of her parents and Rosa changing.

GINGER & ROSA has a mixed worldview, with a constant battle between Rosa’s Catholicism and her best friend’s father’s atheism. All and all, everyone chooses to do what they emotionally want to do, though the movie shows the destruction in this as well. Ginger is sweet and joyous, but the bad decisions of the people around her, especially Rosa and her father, cause her to go into depression. The movie shows a very broken world.

Elle Fanning as Ginger does some extraordinary acting playing Ginger. The parents, Alessandro Nivola and Christina Hendricks, need some work, as they seem as if they are just mouthing retorts.

All and all, GINGER & ROSA is slow and sad. It’s another movie showing an older man taking advantage of the emotions of a young girl.
