The idea of having a personification of a Gideon Bible trying to talk a man out of murdering someone is unique and clever. However, the lackluster script mostly consists of two men in a hotel room talking. Also, although the movie stresses the need for repentance and growing in the Christian faith, viewers don’t see Peter change his mind about killing Leo. In fact, the ending remains unresolved. This unresolved ending is rather disappointing and unsatisfying. Available On Demand and through DVD and streaming, GUN AND A HOTEL BIBLE also contains some foul language and lewd references. GUN AND A HOTEL BIBLE is a drama short available on Demand and through Amazon, iTunes and YouTube. It’s about a man named Peter who’s on the verge of killing his ex-girlfriend’s current boyfriend. The only thing that stops Peter is a personified version of a hotel Bible named Gideon, who tries to talk Peter out of carrying through with his deadly plan. The basic plot in GUN AND A HOTEL BIBLE is clever and stresses the need for repentance and growing in the Christian faith, but the plot is mostly two men talking in a hotel room, the ending is open ended, and there is some foul language and lewd content.
The movie opens up in a bar where a man, Peter, and his girlfriend, Cindy, sit and talk. Peter narrates the scene and says he and Cindy have just broken up. Peter says Cindy was the only positive thing in his life, and their relationship ended quickly when she left him for another man, Leo.
Fast forward six months. Peter’s been stalking Cindy just to make sure she’s “okay.” Although he admits it was good to see her smile after he made her so unhappy, Peter is filled with hate and rage. He checks into their favorite hotel and waits by the window with a gun to shoot Leo because he can’t handle the idea that Cindy could be happy without him.
As Peter prepares to kill Leo, Gideon the Bible appears. Gideon introduces himself and begins to question Leo. Gideon is dressed in a suit and has a quirky attitude. The interrogation between the two turns into conversation. Viewers learn that Peter grew up in a Christian home but gave up Christianity when his dad died. Gideon tells Peter God is the Creator of life. Therefore, God doesn’t owe us an explanation as to us why or how He can take life away just as easily as He gives life.
Peter periodically checks the clock to see when Leo and Cindy will appear. In between each buzz of the alarm, Gideon disappears for a moment, then reappears with a new Bible verse. In doing so, Gideon brings up several Bible verses, but Peter has heard them all. However, when Peter agrees to just flip through the Bible and read a verse, it appears Gideon is finally getting through to Peter. Sadly, though, the verse they land on convinces Peter to go through with his deadly plan.
GUN AND A HOTEL BIBLE may remind avid moviegoers of the 2018 movie BAD TIMES AT THE EL ROYALE. However, GUN AND A HOTEL BIBLE falls short in its production quality and sometimes lackluster execution. The plot mostly consists of two men talking in a hotel room. This would have been more entertaining with better dialogue and acting. Also, although the basic plot here is unique and clever and stresses the need for repentance and growing in the Christian faith, viewers don’t see Peter change his mind about killing Leo. Ultimately, however, the movie doesn’t show whether Peter actually goes through with his plan or not. Thus, the ending is open ended, which is disappointing and unsatisfying.
