More Detail:
Episode 1 begins with Janet receiving a call at work in the clinic from Aunt Amy that Willis has fallen off his horse. Janet tells them she’ll come to the ranch. On the way, she calls her brother, James, in Chicago to inform him of the injury. As she examines the stubborn Willis, she determines that nothing appears broken but advises that he avoid heavy lifting and rest, both of which he denies are possible. She asks him to come to the clinic tomorrow for X-rays.
A neighbor, Daniel Newman, asks what side of the fence the injury occurred on, fearing legal liability. Aunt Amy confronts him, saying their family doesn’t hide behind lawyers like his family does. She also claims the longstanding family feud didn’t stop when his father passed. The Newman family has wanted the Hamilton Ranch for themselves.
The next day, Janet confirms that nothing is broken but urges him to see a cardiologist. He insists he doesn’t have the time, because there’s no one to run the ranch.
Aunt Amy calls James and expresses her worries for the ranch and struggles as a caretaker. She says the strain isn’t sustainable. James assures her he’ll make some arrangements for help and has another trusted pastor cover for him for one week.
Aunt Amy welcomes James back to the ranch, and Willis expresses some resentment for James moving away, leaving him with such a workload. Willis feels that the ranch and the legacy of generations are on his shoulders, but he’s glad his son came to help. He doesn’t resent his children’s callings and knows it’s best for each of them, However, he’s struggling with letting the legacy die with him and having no one to carry it after him.
That night at dinner, James says grace and prays for the strength to get through these challenging times. Aunt Amy shares that Janet has been a tremendous help with the ranch when she’s not at the clinic, balancing books and keeping the herd healthy. James mentions that, because many people rely on him back at his church, he can only stay at the ranch for a week. Amy is stunned and urges him to open his eyes and see that the Hamilton Legacy is at stake. She says they need him to stay for a few more weeks.
Will James extend his stay to take care of his family and the ranch?
