More Detail:

HOUSEHOLD SAINTS tells the story of three generations of Italian-American women who struggle with their ties to old superstitions, their Catholic faith and life in a new society in 1950’s New York. Catherine lives with her widowed father and brother. One night in a Pinochle game, her father lets the local butcher win her hand in marriage. Happy to be free from her oppressive situation, Catherine now encounters a difficult and superstitious mother-in-law. When Catherine miscarries her baby and the mother delivers it dead, she shows no sympathy. After a while, the mother-in-law dies, and Catherine and her husband begin to enjoy a new relationship. They have a daughter, Teresa, who dreams of being the bride of Christ from stories she hears at school, and the mother-in-law’s superstitions and old ways seem to reappear with her.

This unusual film is an intrinsic look at the Catholic faith and is not for everyone. The overall tone is depressing and contains a number of distressing elements such as: a dead baby covered with blood; a mentally disturbed uncle with bizarre fantasies; a suicide with a knife; and, a first-time sexual encounter. For many viewers, this movie is a look at the religion of being religious. Perhaps, for some, it will be a gentle reminder of the true freedom we have in our belief in a God who loves us.
