PILGRIM’S PROGRESS

"An Allegory About Real Life"

Watch:

What You Need To Know:

PILGRIM’S PROGRESS tells the story of Christian, who is an archetype of every Christian who perseveres in his faith until he enters the kingdom of heaven. Christian is burdened by the sins that he has committed, which seem to grow as he reads the Bible. Eventually, he meets Evangelist who tells him to flee the city of destruction. So, he heads off on his journey to the Gates of Heaven. Along the way, he meets characters, situations, demons, powers, and principalities that try to take him off the path until he gets to his ultimate destination.

The production values in PILGRIM’S PROGRESS are very good. The acting, especially the leads, exhibits good direction and believable performances, although once in a while, some of the lesser actors lose their focus. The book PILGRIM’S PROGRESS is an episodic, though powerful, journey that does not easily translate into a movie. The fact that the filmmakers have converted it into such an entertaining movie is quite commendable. However, there are moments when the sequential nature causes the jeopardy to lapse and interest to flag. Even so, this is a very well made Christian movie.

Content:

(CCC, BBB, V) Extremely Christian, biblical worldview; no foul language; some sword fights, beatings, torture, and burning at the stake but done in a very mild manner; no sex; no drinking; no smoking; and, nothing else objectionable.

More Detail:

After the Bible, PILGRIM’S PROGRESS is one of the best-selling books of all time. It was written by John Bunyan while he was in prison for his faith. It tells the story of Christian, who is an archetype of every Christian who perseveres in his faith until he enters the kingdom of heaven.

There have been several attempts to make movies of THE PILGRIM’S PROGRESS, and this is the best by far. It translates the story into contemporary settings. Christian is burdened by the sins that he has committed, which seem to grow as he reads the Bible. Eventually, he meets Evangelist, a well-dressed African American preacher who tells him to flee the city of Destruction. His wife and children ridicule him and will not go with him. So, he heads off on his journey to the Gates of Heaven.

Along the way, he meets characters, situations, demons, powers, and principalities that try to take him off the path. He also meets angels and fellow pilgrims, such as Hopeful and Faithful, who help him to continue on the right path.

The situations presented have very real connections to the trials and tribulations every Christian goes through in his or her life. The call to leave our burdens at the Cross, to accept the free gift of grace, and to avoid getting embroiled in legalism or libertinism, are all situations reminiscent of everyday life.

The production values in PILGRIM’S PROGRESS are very good, especially the sound, which is critical in a low budget movie. The acting, especially the leads, exhibits good direction and believable performances, although once in a while, some of the lesser actors lose their focus.

The book PILGRIM’S PROGRESS tells an episodic, though powerful, journey. Thus, it does not easily translate into a movie. The fact that the filmmakers have converted it into such an entertaining and interesting movie is quite commendable. However, there are moments when the sequential nature causes the jeopardy to lapse and interest to flag.

That said, this is a very well made Christian movie. The filmmakers should be congratulated, and it is highly commended viewing.
