REVIEW: SOMEBODY’S DAUGHTER: A JOURNEY TO FREEDOM FROM PORNOGRAPHY is a documentary where three men, including a pastor, discuss on camera their descent into the addiction of pornography and how through the power of God and counsel of godly men they overcame this destructive addiction.
Using re-enactments of a husband hiding his wicked habit from his wife, the emotional pain of pornography is exposed. On camera, men and their wives candidly discuss these issues.
The thesis of the documentary is that pornography robs the user of joy and true intimacy, destroying relationships. It says that pornography helps a man to “feel like a man without requiring him to be one.”
Pornography creates a world of secrecy, guilt, and shame. These feelings drive a man using pornography to pull away from his wife and even children.
The documentary points out that because of the advent of the Internet, pornography is more available than ever before and the addiction is rampant. Through the interviews, the power of Jesus is shown to be the only thing that can really deliver men from pornography.
SOMEBODY’S DAUGHTER is compelling because of the subject matter and the very painfully honest confessions on camera by these men. The production values are minimal, which seems to be the desire to let the men tell their stories and let the truth take center stage.
