UNFORGETTABLE SUMMER is a Romanian anti-war film that preaches against nationalism and tells the story of a young Romanian officer who moves his wife and family to a remote border outpost. The story opens in Bucharest in 1925 and depicts the evils of warfare and man’s inhumanity to man. The city is marked by the blatant immorality characteristic of the 1920s. Captain Dumitriu is a bright, young officer in the royal Romanian army. His wife, Marie-Therese, an Oxford-educated woman related to the royal Hapsburg Family, is beautiful, yet naive. Repulsed by the decadent life in Bucharest, Dumitriu requests a transfer. His contemptuous superior sends him to a remote area plagued by bandits. Once there, he disobeys an immoral order and displays compassion toward innocent peasants falsely accused of murder.
UNFORGETTABLE SUMMER reveals the insanity of nationalistic violence and political wars and shows that compassion and kindness can help resolve differences among enemies. However, even though the Bible supports the idea of loving one’s enemies, the movie’s premise that all men are brothers is an empty principle by itself. Differences cannot be resolved merely by human kindness. Stiff acting and an underdeveloped and vague premise render this movie utterly forgettable.
