More Detail:

THE LAST OF THE SEA WOMEN is a documentary on Apple TV+ about the women of Jeju Island, a fierce group of South Korean free divers who are not only fighting to save and protect the ocean and provide for their communities, but also to preserve their culture and way of life. LAST OF THE SEA WOMEN is a striking documentary with stunning visuals of sea life and the rigorous work and risks the women who free dive take every day, but there are some perilous situations, conversations about death and a few references to pagan spiritual elements, so MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for young children.

The movie seeks to share insights on a dying culture. It follows the story of a few of the oldest free divers still working. The women talk about the importance of protecting the sea life in the ocean, as well as their desire to continue the long-standing tradition of free diving for deep sea harvesting.

The movie also details other threats to the tradition, such as ocean pollution, environmental changes and threats from surrounding oceans. Japan also has a plan to leak radioactive water into the ocean, which would be one of the women’s greatest risks of all.

On another island, two younger free divers have started to share the tradition and their experiences on social media. In one of the movie’s most touching moments, the older women and the younger woman share a meal and discuss their love for the tradition, plus what they need to help the tradition last.

LAST OF THE SEA WOMEN is often breathtaking. It shows the beauty of marine life, and the hard and risky work that the free divers do every day to feed their communities. The women stress courage and how being in nature helps them have a positive outlook despite the many obstacles that come their way.

Despite there being no explicit Christian or faith elements, the movie is a beautiful testament to God’s creation. Sadly, this is marred slightly by some false pagan spirituality connected to Korean culture. That said, LAST OF THE SEA WOMEN stresses the importance of courage, sisterhood, family, community, and preserving tradition.

MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for younger children.
