THE WORD OF GOD IN ENGLISH

Content:

(CCC) Very strong Christian worldview; nothing objectionable.

More Detail:

The Bible is the foundation of the Christian Faith. Jewish scribes treated the Bible with the utmost reverence, paying attention to every jot and tittle. For centuries, the church was deeply concerned about translating the Bible accurately to reflect the intention of the author, God.

In the last 50 years, there has been a deluge of Bible translations. Many of them in an attempt to become contemporary have completely abandoned the original meaning of the text. There is no doubt that the Bible needs to be translated so it can be read by contemporary people in every society, but it is important that those translations capture the beauty, the poetry, the form, the meaning, and even the ambiguity of the original text.

In THE WORD OF GOD IN ENGLISH, Leland Ryken has set forth a criteria of excellence in Bible translation. He points out all of the fallacies of current theoretical approaches and the necessity of reflecting the Word of God as God intended it. He makes the point that many pastors now quote a text and then say, in the Greek this really means, which tells the audience that the translation is not trustworthy. He calls us not to return to any specific translation, but to look for translations that are faithful and true. His book is so good that I have earmarked whole sections of it.

For anybody who cares about the Word of God, this is must reading. As God says to us in Deut. 4:2, “You shall not add to the word that I command you, nor take away from it.”
