More Detail:

VEGGIETALES: THE BEST CHRISTMAS GIFT is the first episode of a new series of VeggieTales cartoons that’s coming out on DVD this year. VeggieTales first debuted in December of 1993. Now, 26 years after audiences first fell in love with the characters, VeggieTales is being reborn with the same beloved voice actors who brought it to life so long ago.

The episode starts off with everyone at Mr. Nezzer’s theater, including Larry the Cucumber and Bob the Tomato, in a festive mood while planning a Christmas showcase, when they receive a letter from a boy, Arthur, who isn’t very excited about Christmas. The reason Arthur feels down is because his dad lost his job, and he’s getting a new job in another city. Arthur is sad his family has to move, and he has to leave all his friends behind. He asks, “How can I be happy about Christmas when things aren’t going so well?” When the crew hears this letter, they are all the more determined to put on a good show to cheer Arthur up and to give him a reason to celebrate.

However, Bob the Tomato is very confused about what Christmas is all about. He tries his hardest to make sure they have a perfect Christmas presentation, and he gets very frustrated when he discovers they don’t even have a decorative Christmas tree. Bob says a tree is what makes Christmas worth celebrating, but then Pa Grape corrects Bob and says that he needs to tell Arthur why Christmas is worth celebrating. So, Pa Grape starts to narrate the Nativity story, and he begins with the shepherds.

As in most Nativity scenes and plays, it has historically inaccurate depictions In this play, the shepherds and the wise men meet each other when the wisemen are on the way to the stable, and they tell the shepherds they are following the bright star to see a king born in a stable, but this encounter is not factual. While the shepherds were present at the birth of Christ, the wise men were following the star for a couple of years before they actually got to meet Jesus. It is also noteworthy to point out that one of the wisemen in the play is a woman, and she says she preferred the term wise persons, which is another historical inaccuracy that’s played for comedy.

When the shepherds hear why the wisemen are following the star, they believe that the wisemen are crazy until they see angels in the sky. The angels sing about a messiah being born in Bethlehem, but Jr. Shepherd still doesn’t understand what a messiah is. When the Shepherds arrive in Bethlehem, Jr. has his questions answered by Pa Grape. Pa Grape, who is also the narrator, explains to Jr., that the word messiah means chosen one. The messiah is the one who has come to save everyone from a broken world. He has come to save everything. He says that the promise of Christmas is God with us in the bad times and God with us to end the bad times.
