Jon Favreau’s Live Action STAR WARS Series Will Be Extremely Pricey for Disney

By Tess Farrand, Contributing Writer

You may know Jon Favreau for directing movies like IRON MAN or THE JUNGLE BOOK, but now he has something new up his sleeve… a Star Wars live action TV series.

At the end of 2019, Disney will debut a new streaming service that’ll compete with Netflix, Hulu an Amazon Video. Here, audiences will have access to original Disney content including five new TV series and five original movies in the first year. Additionally, Disney classics will be available for viewing too! Executives at the studio seem to be merging old and new to keep current.

In the coming years, Disney will have a slew of live-action remakes releasing exclusively on the streaming service like THE SWORD AND THE STONE and LADY AND THE TRAMP. Disney has a knack for keeping their fans engaged in Disney culture, and by rebooting these classics, they should disrupt the streaming market.

Derek Thompson of The Atlantic reports how streaming impacts TV and movies overall; “Americans aren’t watching less video entertainment each year. They’re actually watching much, much more—on their smartphones, laptops, and internet-connected TVs—thanks to the rise of streaming, where Netflix, not Disney, reigns supreme.”

Soon, that might change. Disney plans to keep the content family-friendly, unlike Netflix and Amazon who primarily make shows that are full violence, sex and foul language. With family-friendly options, Disney’s streaming service could pull large audiences away from other competitors.

Although this new streaming service will have substantially less content than that of its competitors, the site’s subscription cost will reportedly be much less. If this service follows the success of any other Disney related ideas, consumers may start rethinking the pros and cons of other streaming sites.

Favreau’s untitled Star Wars series will be among the new series to release on Disney’s streaming service. Digital Trends reports the program will cost upwards of $100 million to produce, making it one of the most expensive TV series ever, along with GAME OF THRONES and THE CROWN.

Currently, Favreau is directing Disney’s live-action THE LION KING which stars Donald Glover, Beyoncé and James Earl Jones, to name a few. Favreau has a long history with Disney as his Marvel credits show and will not only direct the Star Wars series but will also write the script and serve as executive producer.
