While Christian artist Chris Tomlin is no stranger to celebrating the birth of Jesus through his music, Tomlin’s newest Christmas tune, “Miracle of Love,” celebrates the unexpected and joyful news of his wife’s pregnancy.

Tomlin said that Lauren, his wife of 10 years, noticed familiar symptoms, and decided to take a home pregnancy test. Lauren surprised Chris with the news earlier this year.

“When she got the test result, she said she just started laughing,” Tomlin told People magazine. “She’s like, ‘Oh my gosh, are you kidding me?’ I opened the present, and I was like, ‘what is this?’ I couldn’t compute it. It wasn’t going through my head. And then I almost passed out.”

However, the Tomlins are excited to welcome a third little girl into their family.

“As time progressed obviously started thinking about the great gift of having a child and we found out it’s gonna be a girl so we’re having three, I’ll have three little girls now and what an incredible blessing,” Tomlin said.

The award-winning artist noted that the surprise of a third child made him appreciate the story of Jesus’ birth in a new light.

“This year 2020 has been quite a surprise year right… No one saw this coming,” Tomlin said on Instagram. “If you’ve been to any of my Christmas tours or seen our Christmas concerts, I speak about Christmas being a great surprise. Christmas is God’s great surprise to the world.

“Not many people saw that coming as well,” Tomlin continued. “This little lowly town of Bethlehem right, and there, the Savior of the world was born with no fanfare, no parades, no kingly palace but in a manger, in a cave in Bethlehem. And this year has been a surprise for me in a different way as well when we found out that we’re having our third child.”

Although the current year has its share of hardships, the Tomlins are excited for their own Christmas baby.

“Our baby is due December 14 and I started thinking about having that Christmas baby. I started thinking of the surprise of it. And then I started thinking about the Christmas baby, Jesus, and the surprise of Jesus. And just the miracle of life… the miracle of life that a baby brings, the miracle of life that Jesus brings.”

According to Tomlin, “Miracle of Love” is unlike his other Christmas songs due to the pregnancy news.

“As I sat down to write some songs for this Christmas season—you guys know me and how much I love Christmas music, and I’m always trying to put out new Christmas music—I started thinking about having a Christmas baby.

“I started trying to write a song that has a double meaning in every line. And so when you hear ‘Miracle of Love’…I hope you hear the double meaning of Jesus in every line…” Tomlin added.

The first verse of the song reads: “I got the news today / I heard that you were coming / It took my breath away / and the tears filled up my eyes / Surely you’d change some things / the way that I was living / I hit my knees to pray / so grateful for new life.”

Tomlin said he cherishes the moment he shared the lyrics with his wife.

“She just started tearing up,” Tomlin said. “I don’t think she’s ever done that before when I’ve just read lyrics to her. She just loved it. She was like, ‘Wow, what a beautiful picture of both things happening.’ It was real special.”
