TikTok Promotes ‘Summertime’ Online Safety Tips Ahead of Internet Safety Month

By Movieguide® Staff

TikTok recently launched a new set of online safety tips ahead of Internet Safety Month in June.

With over 1 billion monthly active users, TikTok has come under fire for a potentially harmful business model that exposes its users to dangerous content. But the company hopes to dispel some fear from concerned parents and medical experts as students break from school for Summer vacation.

In addition, TikTok announced a “cybersecurity toolkit” to help families stay aware of what their children do on the app and keep them safe.

TikTok worked with several major online safety organizations to compile a short list of tips to equip parents, and discerning users, with tools to stay safe on the internet.

Here are TikTok’s “key tips”:

Surf smart – Use caution when connecting to unsecured public Wi-Fi on the go. Be sure to set strong, unique passwords on all accounts, and enable 2-step verification for an added layer of security

Keep it all in the family – Check out TikTok’s easy-to-use safety and privacy controls with tools to customize your online experience

Catch the right fish – Phishing is a tactic used to trick people into giving up personal information. Avoid opening, downloading, or clicking links and attachments from unrecognized senders

Leave no trace – Keep all devices and apps updated with the latest software and offload unused apps. Before trading in devices, back up personal data like photos or videos, and erase all content and settings to keep personal information private

Play, watch, and learn together – Download apps, watch videos, play games, and stay engaged as a family to foster camaraderie across generations

“School’s almost out for the summer! With temperatures heating up, and families trading in backpacks for swimsuits and leisure, TikTok remains dedicated to inspiring our global community to stay safe online,” the announcement on TikTok’s website reads. “As part of our ongoing efforts to encourage people to #BeCyberSmart, we’re celebrating Internet Safety Month with creators, experts, and leading organizations like Cathy Pedrayes, ConnectSafely, the Family Online Safety Institute (FOSI), National Cybersecurity Alliance (NCA), Identity Theft Resource Center (ITRC), and the Global Cyber Alliance (GCA).”

GCA President and CEO Phillip Reitinger added: “With its global and vibrant community, TikTok provides a powerful platform for spreading cybersecurity awareness and ‘how to’ knowledge at scale, as we work to achieve our commitment to building a safer, more secure world.”

TikTok’s recent focus on family’s online safety is likely due to backlash over some of the social media apps’ more harmful content.

Movieguide® recently reported:

Anderson filed a wrongful-death lawsuit in the U.S. District Court of Eastern Pennsylvania and claimed that TikTok and its parent company ByteDance’s app is “predatory and manipulative.”

“TikTok is programming children for the sake of corporate profits and promoting addiction,” the suit reads.

“You never know what you might find … or the things [they’re] trying that you think that 10-year-olds wouldn’t try,” Anderson said. “They’re trying because they’re kids and they don’t know no better.”
