It’s finally happening!

Disney+ announced that Christopher Paolini’s popular book series The Inheritance Cycle will get a live-action adaptation based on the first book in the series, Eragon.

The live-action series will be created by Paolini, HIGH POTENTIAL showrunner Todd Harthan and SUPERMAN & LOIS showrunner Todd Helbing, Deadline reported.

“So, what does in-development mean? Well, in-development is the stage right before you go into pre-production and actual production, which means that we are writing scripts,” Paolini shared in a video on X. “And have been writing scripts for, geez, two years now. We are prepping art and doing all sorts of other things to fully move into production. The series has not reached the production stage yet, but it is in development.”

“Getting to this stage has actually been a big step. Todd Harthan and I had to come up with a pilot that Disney really liked,” the author continued. “We had to digest everything about the books and figure out how best to tackle the material, how to stay true to Eragon and Saphira’s story, while also adapting this for visual media.”

“And there are many choices that have to be made along the way, and so far, I’ve been happy with the choices, so I want you to feel good about that as well,” he added. “That said, this is a long process, but we are really close to this, hopefully going full bore into production. I will share as much news as I can, but there’s only so much I can say at the moment, because lots of decisions are being made behind the scenes, and it wouldn’t be fair on my part to the folks I’m working with to be, you know, opening the door on those private conversations.”

Paolini originally published Eragon in the early 2000s.

“When fifteen-year-old Eragon finds a polished blue stone in the forest, he thinks it is the lucky discovery of a poor farm boy. But when the stone brings a dragon hatchling, Eragon soon realizes he has stumbled upon a legacy nearly as old as the Empire itself,” the book’s synopsis reads. “Overnight his simple life is shattered, and, gifted with only an ancient sword, a loyal dragon, and sage advice from an old storyteller, Eragon is soon swept into a dangerous tapestry of magic, glory, and power. Now his choices could save — or destroy — the Empire.”

Then in 2006, a movie adaptation was released.

Part of Movieguide®’s review for the movie reads:

ERAGON is no LORD OF THE RINGS, but it has heart and excitement. Ed Speelers is a very talented, appealing actor who makes the title role his own. He is superbly supported by Jeremy Irons as Brom and Robert Carlyle as the evil Durza. ERAGON has a strong moral worldview with the good guys fighting overtly labeled demonic powers. Rated PG, it is relatively family friendly, despite the theme of magical dragons.

“To say this is surreal is an understatement, but it’s very welcome,” Paolini said of the upcoming series, “and I’m super happy to be in this position, and I’m only in this position and the franchise is only in this position because of the support of all of the awesome fandom and that big push everyone did with the tweet storm and stuff a few years ago really did make the difference with Disney. So from me to you, thank you. I can’t wait to help bring this awesome show to the screen.”

Eragon fans can’t wait to see Disney and Paolini bring the beloved book to the screen.
