The long-promised ERAGON live-action series from Disney+ has finally selected some crew members.
The show was first reported in development in 2022.
Todd Harthan and Todd Helbing will be co-showrunners. Harthan is co-creator alongside Eragon author Christopher Paolini. The three of them will executive produce along with Marc Webb and Rachel Moore, Variety reported last week.
IGN writer Ryan Leston said “it’s thought” that Paolini will serve as a showrunner, too, but the show is too early in development to decide.
The official logline for the show reads, “When destiny selects an ordinary teenager to become the first Dragon Rider in over a hundred years, he must forge an unbreakable bond with his dragon, master ancient magic, and challenge the mad king who destroyed the Riders.”
Writers have been at work on the project since the end of 2025, Glass Almanac reported.
Bert Salke will executive produce with Co-Lab 21. 20th Television is the studio, which optioned the whole Inheritance Cycle four-book YA series.
The books have over 40 million copies worldwide. There was a 2006 movie, called ERAGON, that made $250 million at the worldwide box office against a budget of $100 million. It was meant to kick off a movie franchise, but that never happened.
Most of the critics’ reviews for the movie were negative, Deadline noted. It has a 15% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 46% audience score.
Part of Movieguide®’s review of ERAGON reads, “ERAGON is no LORD OF THE RINGS, but it has heart and excitement. Ed Speelers is a very talented, appealing actor who makes the title role his own. He is superbly supported by Jeremy Irons as Brom and Robert Carlyle as the evil Durza.”
“ERAGON has a strong moral worldview with the good guys fighting overtly labeled demonic powers,” the review continues. “Rated PG, it is relatively family friendly, despite the theme of magical dragons.”
Harthan is showrunner on ABC’s HIGH POTENTIAL. He created the Fox drama ROSEWOOD and credits include PSYCH, CRASH, DOMINION, THE RESIDENT and THE COMPANY YOU KEEP. Helbing co-created SUPERMAN & LOIS and was showrunner on THE FLASH. He’s currently developing MECH CADETS and has worked on BLACK SAILS, SMALLVILLE and SPARTACUS.
Webb directed (500) DAYS OF SUMMER, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN and THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2.
If the ERAGON series follows in the same success as the PERCY JACKSON series remake on Disney+, then the Eragon book series fans are sure to be satisfied.
