New LORD OF THE RINGS Movie Pushed to December 2024

By Movieguide® Contributor

THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE WAR OF ROHIRRIM has been pushed back to the end of next year amid a slew of movie delays from Warner Bros.

Originally slated for an April release, the movie will now hit theaters on December 13, 2024.

The delay comes from a series of re-dated releases to allow actors to promote Warner Bros.’ DUNE: PART TWO, which is currently impossible to promote due to the ongoing actors’ strike.

DUNE: PART TWO was moved from November 3 to March next year, taking the place of GODZILLA X KONG: THE NEW EMPIRE and pushing that movie to April. With the April slot no longer available, THE WAR OF ROHIRRIM was forced to delay until December.

While the eight-month delay will disappoint fans, a Christmas release is nothing new for the franchise. Peter Jackson’s wildly successful LORD OF THE RINGS movies and THE HOBBIT trilogy were all released in December, Deadline reported.

THE LORD OF THE RING: THE WAR OF ROHIRRIM will bring a new look to the franchise, as the anime-styled movie “depict[s] the bloody saga behind Helm’s Deep,” Variety added. While Peter Jackson is not involved in the project, the movie will reportedly include stylistic nods to his legendary movies.

Movieguide® previously reported:

New Line Cinema, the studio behind THE LORD OF THE RINGS and THE HOBBIT trilogies, will expand the LOTR universe with an original anime theatrical feature, THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE WAR OF ROHIRRIM.

The studio and Warner Bros. Animation will tackle the project, which “will depict the bloody saga behind Helm’s Deep, the fortress depicted in ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers,’ and the man in whose honor it’s named: Helm Hammerhand, the legendary King of Rohan who spent much of his reign locked in a prolonged and costly war,” Variety reported.
