Christian Comedian Chonda Pierce: Cancel Culture Means ‘Missing Some Great Laughs’

By Movieguide® Contributor

Christian comedian Chonda Pierce says cancel culture’s influence means “missing some great laughs.”

“You’re shooting yourself in the foot,” she said of cancel culture. “In 25 years, there will be no reality of what was really going on in 2023. First of all, there’s free speech, and second of all, you’re missing some great laughs. The world today is so crazy.”

Pierce even joked, “I would love to be canceled. It would be so cool — and great publicity.”

In an interview with the Christian Post, she spoke further about cancel culture and political correctness.

“I’m not politically correct,” Pierce said. “I’ve been crafting a long letter to Dave Chappelle because I want to tell him welcome to the family.”

She continued, “The bottom line is, comedy is a beautiful way to speak truth. It is a palatable way for your audience to accept truth, and that’s all he did, was speak his truth and his opinion, so he gets beat up over it.”

While Pierce loves stand-up comedy, she recently shared that she might be coming to the end of her touring days.

“It’s such the closing of a great long career,” she explained. “Sometimes I go through cities, and I go, ‘This is probably the last time I’ll be through here.’ Just because I know what my schedule is like in the few years ahead, but I really do want to wind it down a little bit, and I do love acting. I used to be able to do it all, but I can’t anymore. I can’t tour and then go to conferences that I love to get to do.”

Pierce continued, “I just sense it in my spirit. My pastor says there’s no retiring in the Kingdom of God, and I believe that. But in my spirit, I feel like the Lord’s doing a new thing. I don’t know if that’s maybe getting to do more acting or more movies. I don’t know if that’s just local ministry in my own local church. I’m not sure what that looks like yet.”

Movieguide® previously reported on one of her latest projects, ROLL WITH IT:

Comedian Chonda Pierce is finally taking center stage in her latest movie ROLL WITH IT.

Her latest movie, the story of a widow working to stay afloat financially, is the first time Pierce has scored a leading role. In addition to that, the comedian has a very personal connection to ROLL WITH IT’s story.

“It’s kind of the last story idea my husband and I worked on before he passed,” Pierce shared. “It sat on my desk for a long, long time. I think I was in the middle of doing a Hallmark movie and one of the directors said, ‘Have you ever done a movie around your persona?’ And I said, ‘Well, as a matter of fact I have.’”

“I pray that people will understand the power of prayer, and how God answers prayer in ways we don’t see Him coming,” Pierce said of her hope for the movie’s impact. “That’s what’s so sweet about this story. The widow, she goes into her prayer closet a lot. And she’s praying, and she’s getting desperate, and she’s getting hurt, because it doesn’t look like God’s coming through. And of course, He does it in a way that she totally didn’t see coming. It has very little to do with karaoke. It has everything to do with his plan. And I love that.”
