On the blue carpet for the premiere of SKETCH, the new family action fantasy that deals with loss, actress Amber Shana Williams shared how she copes with hard times.

For Williams, she said she leans on her friends.

“[T]hat is how I cope, with my friends. They’ve gotten me through some really dark times, and I love them so much,” THE CHOSEN actress told Movieguide®.“I spent so much of my life bearing the weight of my burdens, thinking that it made me stronger not to express myself, not to share that I’m in pain.”

“And it wasn’t until…it was just like, ‘You know, it’s okay to talk to people you trust,’” Williams added.

In the movie SKETCH, the character Amber (Bianca Belle), after losing her mother, starts expressing her dark thoughts in the form of drawings of monsters that she keeps in a secret sketchbook. Her dad Taylor’s (Tony Hale) concern turns into a nightmare when the sketchbook accidentally lands in a magical pond, bringing his daughter’s drawings to life.

Since the movie touches on creativity as an outlet for childhood stressors, Williams shared what creative outlet she turned to as a child to help her cope, and she had a funny and relatable response.

“I still like singing. So I’m naturally obsessed with karaoke,” Williams revealed. “We had like, this little walkie-talkie karaoke thing…I used to drive everyone mad. So anytime I’m having a bad day, you can guarantee that music was blasting.”

What was one of the Texas native’s go-to songs? Toni Braxton’s “Unbreak My Heart.”

“I was way too young…Can you imagine like a seven-year-old singing[that],” she joked, “Like “Who broke your heart, Sweetheart?’ But I was singing it.”

Williams posted a video of her prepping before and at the premiere, giving a shoutout to the Angel Studios’ release.

“I love the bold, genre-blending work Angel Studios continues to create. Hilarious performance by @mrtonyhale and a fantastic directorial debut of @thesethworley,”she posted. “Grateful to have shared the evening with such good company – and a glam team that understood the assignment.”

Tony Hale, who also served as producer, discussed the movie’s “genre-blending” balance between the subject of loss, fantasy and humor.

“Honestly, it was this, you know, story about grief, but then at the same time this, like, fun, adventurous, beautiful monster movie,” Hale told Movieguide® in another interview. “[T]hat kind of clash of both of those to try to ground it in humanity, and this kind of supernatural bashing in, I was like, I’m on board. I love it.”

A fun, family-friendly movie — we’re on board for that, too!

SKETCH is now in theaters.
