RUTH & BOAZ

“A Musical Twist on Biblical Tale”

What You Need To Know:

Tyler Perry’s Ruth & Boaz is a modern-day retelling of the biblical story of Ruth and Boaz, streaming on Netflix, that puts a modern-day spin on the familiar Biblical story. Ruth, an aspiring singer, is feeling disillusioned with the music industry. However, when she tries to leave her manager, he makes threats, and Ruth goes on the run. She winds up at a winery in Tennessee, where she meets the owner, Boaz. The pair quickly strike up a relationship, but when the past comes calling, Ruth must decide whether to keep running or to stay and fight for the love she’s found.

RUTH & BOAZ is an interesting twist on the biblical tale, featuring the same characters, set in the world of the music industry. Lead actress Serayah shines, both in her acting performances and her musical numbers, and she and Phylicia Rashad have excellent onscreen chemistry. The movie has strong production value with impressive sets and good use of camera angles to set the stage for a polished retelling of a familiar story. Overall, RUTH & BOAZ has a moral, Christian worldview. Many characters pray and discuss their faith, as well as singing Christian songs (ex, “Goodness of God”). There’s also a strong emphasis on friendship, love, and community, as characters are shown to care deeply for one another and want to help and support those in need. There are a few instances of strong language, as well as some light alcohol use and a brief violent scene. MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for younger viewers.

When the past comes calling, will they stand firm, or will Ruth keep running?

Ruth and her friend and bandmate, Breana, are on the cusp of making it big. Their hip-hop duo act is about to be signed to an Atlanta label, but Ruth feels conflicted. She doesn’t love the music they’re making and feels disconnected from what was once her passion.

She decides to quit music, but her manager, Syrus, threatens her. Ruth doesn’t believe him, but after she loses two of the important people in her life in what appeared to be an accident, Syrus tells her he was behind it — and he’ll do the same to Naomi, the mother of Ruth’s boyfriend.

To protect Naomi, Ruth follows her to Tennessee, where she ends up working at a local vineyard. There, she meets Boaz, the owner of the vineyard and winery. He’s immediately drawn to her, but Ruth, still conscious of Syrus’ threats, refuses to get too close.

As the weeks pass and Ruth grows more comfortable with her new life, she lets her guard down, allowing Boaz in. However, when Syrus finds out where Ruth’s been hiding out, she’s drawn back into the danger she thought she left behind. Will Ruth run away again, or will she stay and fight for the life and love she found?
