Chicago Cubs pitcher Matthew Boyd serves others by caring for the vulnerable and pointing them to Christ, something he knows God called him to.
“I think about the numerous times the Scriptures, where it talks about caring for the widowed and the fatherless, and Jesus just met people in community,” Boyd explained on Sports Spectrum’s “Get in the Game” podcast. “You know, He met people in relationship. So when you think about just those things, and you think about those who are vulnerable, who maybe don’t have a voice because of whatever reason, you need a champion for them. You need to be there for them.”
Boyd and his wife Ashley champion the vulnerable through their Kingdom Home foundation, a non-profit that protects “vulnerable children and provide[s] them with a safe and loving upbringing so that those who were once at risk would now thrive.”

The couple desires to “bring hope and healing to these children by serving them holistically — providing for their physical, educational, emotional, and spiritual needs. Our children are free to be children, and encouraged to learn, grow and serve without bearing the weight of fear and worry.”
“It’s not for my own glory. It’s not for Ashley’s glory. It’s not for the people that [are] the house parents who are serving and parenting, pouring into these kids every day. It’s not for their glory,” Boyd continued. “It’s just what we’re supposed to do. And that’s just the main thing is that there was a need. My wife, Ashley, heard the call. She took the action to answer that call, and now we’re just moving as we’re called, and it’s lived out every day, right?”
“It’s lived out in the small intricacies that she’s doing on the operational side and the intricacies of the parenting, you know, whether it’s helping with homework or, you know, the house parents preparing meals every day….Everything’s done out of love and done out of service,” the pitcher explained. “And that’s just how we’re all called to live. And it’s, you know, I mean, simple as that. That’s how Christ calls us.”
An early November Instagram post captures the Boyds’ heart for their mission: “‘For I was hungry and you gave me food.’ — Matthew 25:35. At Kingdom Home, we live this out every day…one meal, one child, one act of love at a time.”
Just as the Boyds answered God’s call to minister to a specific community, the Lord calls each of us to serve those He brings our way. How can you serve your community for Christ today?
