The cast and crew of THE CHOSEN described Season 6 as “easily our hardest” to film — and for good reason.

Shot over their longest stretch yet, the new season mines the sorrowful and intense final chapter of Jesus’s earthly ministry, including his crucifixion, which was as difficult to shoot as one would expect.

Filming for Season 6 concluded in September, and the episodes are set to release in late 2026.

Actor Shaan Sharma said of his experience filming, “It’s been really heavy in the sense of watching some of my co-actors go through some of the hardest emotional work they’ve had to do in the show yet.”

Another actor reportedly said, “You’re not going to feel comfortable when you’re doing a very uncomfortable season.”

Back in June, star Jonathan Roumie who plays Jesus in the series reflected on the heaviness of filming the season on Instagram. He posted a photo of himself standing in front of a cross with a heartfelt message.

“These photos will likely be the only glimpse of me out of costume / makeup that l’ll be able to share for quite a long time; standing next to the cross on which I have become intimately acquainted these last two weeks,” he began. “In fact, I probably won’t get to take photos like these again, given the breakneck schedule and continued intensity of the work ahead.”

Roumie continued, “There is yet more suffering to endure, not only as my character, but through my own sacrificial offering as an artist to embody and accept every ounce of pain and discomfort associated with the process of making Christ’s own suffering very real to everyone who not only participates in the production, but to those who witness the finished product. l.e., YOU.”

The actor explained that the experience has left him speechless.

“Well..there’s not much I can physically say at this point. Not because we’re under NDA’s (we are), but rather, because I have been rendered utterly speechless through this experience in so many ways,” he said. “I have witnessed many members of my cast and crew emotionally leveled much in the same way I have been. The grace is that we have been lifting each other up throughout, and I couldn’t feel more blessed.”

He then ended with a prayer: “Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created, and you shall renew the face of the earth.”

In addition to the upcoming sixth season, Dallas Jenkins’ 5&2 Studios recently launched a children’s version of THE CHOSEN titled THE CHOSEN ADVENTURES. It’s available to stream on Prime Video.

THE CHOSEN fans certainly have a lot to look forward. Season 6 will debut in late 2026 ahead of the season finale’s release in theaters on March 12, 2027. Newsweek reported that Season 7 will debut as a movie depicting Jesus’ resurrection on March 31, 2028.
