When I Said I Do” singers Lisa Hartman Black and Clint Black revealed the one rule that has kept their marriage strong for 35 years.

“We strongly believe in communicating,” Lisa told Fox News Digital. “It sounds so simple, but you really, really have to talk everything through. Roy Rogers said to Clint, ‘One piece of advice: Never go to bed angry.’ And it’s true. You can’t get in the car and drive away. You’ve got to talk it out if you can. A lot of times, you find it was just misinterpreted.”

She went on to stress just how important communication is in a relationship.

“Misinterpretation, unfortunately, is part of the deal. [But] you can clear the air and [say], ‘Oh, that’s what you meant!’ And you know your partner’s heart,” she explained. “I know, and he knows, that we would never mean to hurt each other. He would never intentionally hurt me. But sometimes feelings get hurt. If you can explain yourself, it makes all the difference.”

“Really, it’s communication,” Lisa emphasized. “And he’s my friend. He’s my best friend. When you treat each other that way, you have to honor your friendship, trust it and respect it. We’ve somehow managed to do that, and here we are nearly 35 years later.”

The power couple has partnered with Lifetime to turn their hit country song, “When I Said I Do,” into a new feature film.

“Ali Corley is a widowed search-and-rescue K-9 handler who rebuilt her life after losing her husband in the line of duty. When she meets seasoned rescue specialist Shawn Willis, their connection forces them both to confront the true meaning of commitment,” a synopsis of the movie, also titled WHEN I SAY I DO, reads, per Lifetime.

“Years ago, Clint wrote this song and asked me to sing it with him, and I was afraid to do that,” Lisa told Fox News Digital. “I gave in, fortunately. And here we are today. We’ve had so much success with it — from chart success and awards to nominations, people getting married to it and couples renewing their vows [to it]. We just feel honored to be a part of it.”

The film stars Sarah Drew (GREY’S ANATOMY) and Eric Johnson (A CHRISTMAS LESS TRAVELED). WHEN I SAID I DO debuted on May 23 on Lifetime.

The Blacks’ marriage is a powerful reminder that prioritizing communication, refusing to go to bed angry and maintaining a deep foundation of friendship and trust will keep marriages strong.
