Mandy Moore stars in an exciting new comedy called THE BREADWINNER alongside comedian Nate Bargatze, a movie that explores family dynamics in a fun, relatable way.

“I play a mom who invents something, she goes on SHARK TANK, gets offered a deal and then is off to help, sort of to help with the manufacturing of this product,” Moore told LIVE WITH KELLY AND MARK. “And I leave Nate’s character home with the three kids, and it’s a bit of a role reversal. He’s in over [his head] as…obviously chaos sort of ensues from it.”

Bargatze is brand new to the movie industry, so the fact that movies aren’t filmed in chronological order surprised him.

“He was confused on the first day. He’s like, ‘So we’re not shooting in order? No movies ever shoot in order?’ I was like, ‘No, no,’” Moore recalled.

She added, “Yeah, like, I think his brain broke a little bit, but I understand it is a confusing concept. But yeah, other than that, he’s such a natural.”

While Moore’s been in the industry for decades now, she remembers the learning curves she had to navigate at first.

“THE PRINCESS DIARIES was my first film, and then A WALK TO REMEMBER was my second film, and that’s when I distinctly remember I was like, ‘Wait, how do I hit a mark? Where am I supposed to go?’ So, thank goodness Shane West, who was like my counterpart in the film, was a really good teacher to help me sort of lock in, because it is confusing,” she said.

Other comedians worked on THE BREADWINNER, too, meaning she had to work extra hard not to laugh on set.

“It wasn’t just Nate. It was Will Forte and Kumail Nanjiani and Colin Joss. He surrounded himself with like extremely funny people and other comedians. And so it was my job. I like had to go to some pretty dark places in my brain to keep myself from not laughing,” she explained.

For Moore, her BREADWINNER character relates a little to her real life role as a mom. She shares three children with husband Taylor Goldsmith.

“I’m organized. Like, my husband is home with the kids right now, and he’s way more adept than Nate [in the movie],” she said. “Like, they’re not eating pizza every night. I know that they’re like getting to school on time and everything, but we do handle things differently. I like to have the lunches organized and pretty much ready to go in the fridge the night before and have breakfast stuff all laid out, and he’s like, ‘No, I’ll just wing it when I get up in the morning’ and like ‘Okay that’s how you want to do it, good luck.’”

The trailer shows Bargatze’s character hilariously take on stay-at-home dad life and the chaos that quickly follows.

THE BREADWINNER releases to theaters this weekend, May 29.
