Vanessa Kirby says her FANTASTIC FOUR: FIRST STEPS role helped prepare her to be a mom.

Her character, Sue Storm, is pregnant in FIRST STEPS, and Kirby revealed in May that she is expecting her first child.

“It certainly taught me about motherhood and my own motherhood journey. That can’t be a coincidence,” she told Variety.

“Sue was never sat down. She was never huffing and puffing about it,” Kirby told PEOPLE of her character’s pregnancy.

“It didn’t define who she was,” Kirby says of her Marvel character. “She was absolutely a mother, and of course, in the comics, that’s so definitively her. But she’s also been a team member that defends, that goes up against great threats.”

Storm hardly gets a moment to celebrate the pregnancy, as supervillain Galactus heads to destroy Earth.

“I literally had the lived experience of somebody who was doing this incredibly sacred thing and fulfilling what she needed to do at the same time as a woman and a team member, and that changed me,” Kirby said.

She told Variety that it taught her that motherhood is not passive.

“It centers this woman giving birth, and these three kind and loving men supporting her as she’s doing it,” she told Variety. “It was so cool to see that a superhero was doing something so primal and so utterly human. I was most excited for that bit.”

Kirby has been filming the latest AVENGERS movie while pregnant.

“It’s been the coolest thing to be shooting an AVENGERS movie while pregnant, and they’ve been utterly amazing,” she said on a recent episode of the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast. “The Russos and Kevin [Feige] and the whole team. It’s been very cool to do that.”

She shared she thought carrying a baby would be a lot heavier, so on the set of FANTASTIC FOUR, she asked her costume designer to make her fake belly heavier.

“So we would try all these different things and eventually she kind of put heavy rice packets in the belly and it got so heavy, [and] I got really bad backache,” she said. “And actually it’s nothing like this. This is…way lighter. So, I gave myself a backache for no reason at all.”

She told Variety, “I also did a birth in this this little movie called PIECES OF A WOMAN,” she said. “I was so excited to be asked to do it again, and I also wanted to make it different. And then, of course, we were doing it in zero gravity, so that’s its own challenge.”

Kirby’s baby is due to arrive around November or December of this year.
