BACHELOR Alum Colton Underwood Embraces His Faith After Diagnosis
By Tess Farrand, Associate Content Editor
BACHELOR alum Colton Underwood is using his free time during COVID-19 to “lean into” his Christian faith.
Underwood contracted COVID-19 in March and quarantined himself to keep his loved ones healthy.
“I think in times like this you have to really lean into something, and for me it’s my faith,” Underwood told TODAY. “We have a lot more free time on our hands than normal and for me I always made the excuse of maybe not going to church on Sunday or not doing my daily readings, as though I’m too busy. And I think this has sort of provided some insight and opportunity for me to really just grow even more in my faith and my walk with God.”
After some rough days, Underwood ultimately recovered from the virus.
Feeling much better, made a full recovery. Tested again and I now have the anti-bodies. I’m working with the doctor to find ways I can help donate blood for both research and other people. https://t.co/rF7WST0tOY

Hi, just wanted to give you a health update. The last few days were rougher than I expected. The most prominent symptoms are my cough, night sweats and shortness of breathe. Breathing is challenging, the best way to describe it is feeling like I only have access to 20% of my lungs. I can only imagine how people with pre-existing health conditions feel with this. I’ve been journaling throughout this and I’ll share some of those soon. This morning was the first time that I’ve felt any real type of improvement since the beginning of this. Im hopeful that I’ve turned the corner and will be back to 100% soon. We are very lucky that all of this was manageable at home after getting the proper medicine. I’m on the third story of the Randolph’s home, isolated from the rest of the family (The Health Department called and spoke to both Cassie’s mom and me to make sure we understood timing and what to do). When they make food they make an extra plate and drop it off and have been checking on me regularly to make sure I am comfortable and breathing! They have been amazing and have been taking great care of me. Stay positive people…We got this!
The quarantine provided the perfect opportunity for the reality star to buckle back down in his faith. Like millions of Christians around the world, the sickness and lockdowns meant Underwood was forced to seek digital options for fellowships.
“I’ve never been a firm believer in the only way to talk or communicate with God is through church,” said Underwood. “But that was slowly starting to become a staple in my schedule, where I was enjoying going to churches on Sundays and really becoming rooted in my faith.”
When Underwood was THE BACHELOR, audiences gawked as the then-26 year old abstained from sex. Underwood didn’t necessarily attribute his abstinence to his Christian faith. However, he has said that faith plays a major role in his relationship with his girlfriend, Cassie.
Underwood also told the Huffington Post, “I always say we’re dating with intent. We don’t want to waste time.”
