Co-writer of ‘The Blessing’ Cody Carnes Releases Two New Songs

By Movieguide® Contributor

Christian songwriter Cody Carnes, who co-wrote “The Blessing,” recently released two new songs, “The Dove” and “Plead the Blood”, early out of his upcoming album “Firm Foundation.”

“[‘The Dove’] connects Genesis to John to Acts…all places we see the Holy Spirit threaded in scripture, often ‘like a dove’,” Carnes explained in a recent press release statement. “These moments in scripture share a common thread of new creation and affirmation, and while writing, we found it really beautiful and profound that this same Spirit can live inside of us because of the blood of Jesus. God has invited His people into the same new creation and affirmation.”

Carnes has written several other hit songs in recent years including “Ain’t Nobody” and “Christ Be Magnified”. Carnes also co-wrote “The Blessing” with his wife Kari Jobe. It was released right before and decently popular during the pandemic.

Lyrics from “The Dove” read:

God was there at the beginning, His Spirit brooding like a dove
Spoke the earth into existence, formed creation that He loved
Man was born of perfect image, made to be a friend of God
Meant to dwell within His presence, yeah, it’s where we all belong.

In a previous article from Movieguide® about the writing of “The Blessing” Carnes said:

“We had actually … [been] already writing for eight hours, and we wrote a different song earlier that day, and we were kind of wrapping up getting ready to go home, and this idea happened,” Carnes told Sadie Robertson Huff during an episode of the WHOA THAT’S GOOD podcast. “So we stayed longer. We stayed till about midnight that night. And it just felt like the glory of God came in the room in a different way all of a sudden.”

The album “Firm Foundation” will be released on August 25.
