COCOMELON LANE Releases Episode with Boy in a Tutu Dancing for His Gay Fathers
By Movieguide® Contributor
Netflix’s newly released COCOMELON spinoff COCOMELON LANE features an episode where two gay fathers encourage their son to dress up in a dress.
This decision comes as a disappointment for many parents who do not feel comfortable allowing their young children to view immoral content. This is the first time in the franchise’s long history that its kid-safe, family-friendly image has been tarnished.
Until now, COCOMELON has stood for parental and gender roles which have been reinforced through both the show’s visuals and song lyrics. As Movieguide® previously reported:
COCOMELON contains a strong moral worldview. It prizes family values and is big on kindness and consideration for others. It shows children what a healthy family relationship looks like. Though the show’s audience is young, the creators pay attention to small details. Parents wear wedding rings and always show love for each other and their children. It highlights parental and gender role models with songs like “My Mommy” and “My Daddy.” The show also contains many classic nursery rhymes like “Baa Baa Black Sheep,” “Wheels on the Bus” and “Johny Johny Yes Papa.” This last song is inconsistent with the otherwise wholesome worldview. It is a silly nursery rhyme, but it is acted out by the parents and talks about someone being caught in a lie. The parents, who are otherwise often great examples, fall a little short here.
Unfortunately, Moonbug Entertainment, the studio behind the show, was recently acquired by Disney alum, Kevin Mayer and Tom Stags. This recent acquisition likely plays a large role in this disappointing introduction of immoral themes.
Parents should note that the previously produced COCOMELON seasons (up through season 8) have been untouched, remaining a safe entertainment option for younger children.
However, COCOMELON LANE, the new Netflix original, along with future seasons of COCOMELON (starting with season 9) have been developed under the new leadership, which has opted to stray from the family-friendly values the show was built on. Parents should take caution and monitor the content if they allow their children to watch newer COCOMELON content.
