Dallas Jenkins Hopes REAGAN Biopic Unites Americans

By Movieguide® Contributor

THE CHOSEN creator Dallas Jenkins hopes REAGAN will remind viewers that, despite our differences, “we all want similar things.”

“I’m a child of the ‘80s, so Reagan is the first president I remember, and I was a huge fan then,” Jenkins told Movieguide® at the premiere of REAGAN. “I’ve remained a huge fan now, so this is fun to see…I love seeing a portrayal of what I consider the best president ever.”

REAGAN is a new biopic that tells the life story of former president Ronald Reagan.

“Told through the voice of Viktor Petrovich, a former KGB agent whose life becomes inextricably linked with Ronald Reagan’s when Reagan first caught the Soviets’ attention as an actor in Hollywood, this film offers a perspective as unique as it is captivating,” a description of the movie reads

It continues, “Dennis Quaid brings to life a story that transcends the boundaries of a traditional biopic, offering a profound exploration of the enduring impact of the power of one man who overcame the odds, sustained by the love of a woman who supported him in his journey.”

“I think that we have a tendency nowadays to demonize anyone we disagree with, so any time we have an opportunity to see that, even someone like Ronald Reagan or his wife, Nancy — I happen to politically align with them, [but] there are people who don’t — but to see their humanity, that we all actually want similar things,” Jenkins explained. “We just maybe have different paths to get there or different ideas for how to do it, and that doesn’t mean that people who disagree with us are evil. So, I hope that movies like this can help that a little.”

Quaid, who plays Reagan, told NewsNation Reagan is his “favorite president.”

“This movie is about all of us,” the actor continued. “It goes through eight decades of the American 20th century. If you were born before 1985, you get a chance to remember how great this country used to be. And if you’re born after ’85, you get a glimpse of how great this country still can be.”

The Movieguide® review reads:

REAGAN stars Dennis Quaid as the 40th President of the United States, Ronald Reagan. It covers Reagan’s life from his childhood to his death. There’s a strong focus throughout the movie on Reagan’s lifelong fight against communism. The movie relates Reagan’s battle in the Screen Actors Guild against communist infiltration in the Hollywood unions in the late 1940s. It also details his battle against the Soviet Union’s communist tyranny in Germany and Eastern Europe. Included is Reagan’s dramatic demand that Soviet President Gorbachev tear down the Berlin Wall. In the end, Gorbachev let the people of Germany tear down the wall themselves in November 1989.

Dennis Quaid gives a bravura performance in REAGAN as the beloved President, union leader and movie star. He’s just as good during the more intimate scenes as he is in the iconic public scenes. He’s supported by a great cast, including Jon Voight as a KGB analyst who closely follows Reagan’s beliefs and behavior. The movie’s focus on Reagan’s fight against communism gives a strong narrative structure to REAGAN’s stirring story of faith and patriotism.
