Danica McKellar Rebukes Modern False Idols: ‘What Is Your Faith In?’
By Movieguide® Contributor
Great American Family actress Danica McKellar updated her fans on her goal to read the Bible in 2023, sharing what she’s learned about worshiping false idols in the Old Testament.
“I think that there’s probably a lot of benefit to be had in seeing some of the mistakes that some of the characters in the Bible have made again and again and again and maybe learning from those mistakes…I want to talk about one that happens so much in the Bible, and that is the worshipping of false idols,” she shared in a video posted on the Great American Community website.
“Back in Exodus when we just had the Israelites traveling through the wilderness with Moses, and they literally watched the parting of the Red Sea…Moses leaves for 40 days…and in that time, Aaron actually made a golden calf, and everyone was worshipping it,” McKellar explained.
“What were they getting out of that?” she asked. “Was it really just to worship someone to say, ‘Oh, they’re so great’? Or was it that they believe they were going to get what they want by asking their false idols for it?”
McKellar then considered what false idols look like today.
“Was it like this clickbait that we see that says, ‘Click here and find out the fat burning secret that doctors don’t want you to know about’ or ‘plastic surgeons don’t want you to know about’ or ‘here’s a get-rich-quick scheme’?” she wondered.
“That clickbait that we see is our version of false idols,” the actress continued. “That quick like, ‘Well, can I get what I want without really having to work for it?’ Can I get money fast without having to put in the time and effort every day to get up early? And go after my goals?”
McKellar challenged her viewers to ask themselves what they idolize.
“It might be the broader idea of, what are we putting our faith in instead of God to get what we want,” she said. “So, I want to invite you to ask yourselves, ‘what are my false idols,’ and I don’t want you to go with an easy answer.”
“What are you attracted to that makes you think you’re gonna get what you want without having to put the work in? Or what are you putting your faith in besides God? I’m going to be asking myself this question for a while and I think that for me is the best way to do it,” she concluded.
McKellar’s new film SWING INTO ROMANCE premieres October 7 on the Great American Family Network.
Movieguide® previously reported an update on McKellar’s Bible reading goal:
“This is the first time I’ve read the Bible,” McKellar went on. “I’d read the Gospels before, but never the Old Testament…Right now, I’m in Leviticus which, I’ll admit, is a little dry, but that’s okay. It’s a lot of details, but it’s actually kind of fascinating.”
She then revealed the story that has “stuck” with her the most: the story of Joseph.
McKellar explained that, even after being sold into slavery and imprisoned, Joseph always “rose to the top.”
“His people recognized ‘Oh, this guy is kind of special. Let’s put him in charge of more things,” she said. “I just imagine him doing whatever he needed to do, joyfully…God was with him, he felt it. This idea that, no matter what we’re doing, we can do it with true joy if we are connected to our relationship with God is incredible!”
