Danica McKellar Talks Bible Reading Goal for 2023: ‘[I Want To] Understand God Better’

By Movieguide® Contributor

Danica McKellar updated fans on her 2023 commitment to read the entire Bible this year during a new episode of her Great American Community web series FAITH BITS.

“My goal is to read the entire Bible this year, and I’ve heard it’s very doable,” she started. “They say it’s like 10 to 15 minutes of reading a day.”

The actress shared that she’s reading the Bible “in a few different ways” during her challenge: reading the Bible from her friend Candace Cameron Bure, using a travel-sized Bible and listening to it through an app.

“I love the combination, going back and forth,” she shared. “Oftentimes when I listen, I’ll go back and read what I’ve listened to, and it’s very enriching, and it’s very motivating too.”

As she’s been reading through the Old Testament, McKellar realized that There’s all this stuff I didn’t know anything about.”

For example, she didn’t know anything about people living hundreds and hundreds of years old.”

I have a lot to learn, she explained. I’m still figuring it out.

However, for McKellar, her goal “is not to understand everything.” Instead, her goal “is to read it all.”

She then shared that the goal of reading the Bible is not to understand the book itself, but to “understand God better.”

Movieguide® previously reported on McKellar’s faith journey, including the Bible Bure gave her:

Great American Family actors Danica McKellar and Candace Cameron Bure recently discussed their faith and how they celebrate the Christmas holiday.

McKellar recently joined the CANDACE CAMERON BURE PODCAST and thanked Bure for her gift of a bible which led to a new relationship with Jesus earlier this year.

“Candace, I don’t wanna brush over the huge, huge impact that you’ve had on my life this year,” McKellar said. “I don’t even know how to call that like friendship, it’s more than that. Because of you helping me to find my relationship with God and Jesus, it’s been like a revolution in my life. It’s been a revelation in my life.”

“You gave me this Bible that I read all the time and I love it so much and I go to church now and I just, I talk to Jesus all the time every day. It’s unbelievable. And you were like my guide. You were just an angel in my life and you still are. And I just wanna thank you for that publicly,” she added.

McKellar said that while she grew up around religion, she only saw the “negative side” of it, and was missing out on genuine Christianity.

“There’s so much love and joy,” she explained. “Religion had always been something in my life that I’d only been exposed to the negative part of it. It has been used to do very mean things, evil things throughout history. Anything powerful we use and corrupt it from time to time. And so that was my association with it, and I was missing out on all the amazing, beautiful stuff. Like all the good stuff. I wasn’t open-minded to it before.”

McKellar said that her outlook on Christmas also changed following her deepened relationship with Christ.

“For me personally, the celebration means so much more,” she said of Christmas. “Songs like Tidings of Comfort and Joy, I get what that is now. And I’m not gonna, not buy presents and I’ve already done lots of charity stuff for the holidays, that’s always been part of my life, but it’s also this very quiet, precious celebration of this relationship in my life.”

Both Bure and Mckellar recently switched from Hallmark to Great American Family. McKellar recently filmed her first Christmas movie with the new network, CHRISTMAS AT THE DRIVE-IN.

“A property lawyer works to prove that her town’s Drive In Theater, a local institution, is not closed down at the holidays, finding romance with the very person who is trying to sell the property,” the synopsis on IMDb reads.

Bure also asked McKellar what her 2022 Christmas wish was, and McKellar responded: “I want people to feel the joy that I have found this year. I want people to feel that and I want them to not feel alone. I want them to feel the Holy Spirit with them and feel that support and love and comfort.”

“That’s my wish right along with you,” Bure added. “Thank you for sharing your journey of faith and I’m in prayer alongside you always and encouraging you to share that because there are moments of hope for people and you don’t have to have it all together or know all the answers. You just have to take one step every day. I just love seeing it and I’m just cheering you on along the way.”
