Danny Gokey Shares One ‘Incredible’ Way He Sees God’s Presence

AMERICAN IDOL alum Danny Gokey remembered one of the “cool times” when God showed his presence in his life.

“There’s been so many times that God has shown up in incredible ways. One of the things that comes to mind is my fourth son,” he explained. “His name is Emanuel.”

“When we were pregnant, the Lord told us to name him Emanuel. Something so special is that Emanuel came on my first wife’s birthday,” he said. “Might seem weird to some people. It’s more about God’s presence being in my life.”

Gokey’s first wife, Sophia, passed away during a heart surgery in 2008. At the time, Gokey felt lost and broken.

“Walking through that time was really difficult. Losing a spouse and not knowing what to do next,” he continued. “Eleven years later, having a son that was born on the same day as my first wife’s birthday, it was a reminder that God’s with us in every season.”

“There’s going to be a lot of time that we feel like God’s not with us and our feelings are deceptive, but we have to trust his word and lean into his word and not lean into how we feel in the moment, because there’s safety in his word,” the “I Got You” singer explained. “But he proves it, and he gives us signs, and he gives us confirmations along the way to give us strength, and so that was a cool time.”

Gokey is the father of five kids (one of whom was miscarried) and is married to his wife, Leyicet. He says many people mistake his life as a “happily ever after” story.

“They see me as this guy who lost his wife, and here’s the happily ever after,” Gokey told K-Love. “But I think when they get a look into my real life, they’re like, oh yeah, life hasn’t always been perfect for him since then. Now he and his new wife have had to walk through these new challenges, and they’ve had to cross some really hard barriers in their lives.”

“I’ve been through some seasons where God has put me through some intense trials,” Gokey said, “but I’m going to tell you this: It’s all to refine my character so that when He does give the provision, He does give the blessing, He does give the ministry, I remember that it’s because it’s God’s will — not mine — and this is something that I’m able to steward.”

Right now, Gokey is gearing up for his annual Celebrate Christmas Tour with Natalie Grant, which kicks off on Dec. 5. Currently, there are only eight venues for the tour, all on the east side of the U.S.

“We are so excited for our 9th Annual Celebrate Christmas Tour starting this December 🎄✨ These nights are special for the whole family, Jesus-exalting and always unforgettable,” he said.
