Elon Musk Announces Plans to Combat ‘Woke’ Artificial Intelligence

By Movieguide® Contributor

Elon Musk recently announced his plans to combat woke artificial intelligence—something he sees as a major threat to humankind.

“The danger of training AI to be woke—in other words, lie—is deadly,” Musk warned.

The Daily Wire reports that Musk has approached top “artificial intelligence researchers in recent weeks about forming a new research lab to develop an alternative to ChatGPT,” including Igor Babuschkin, a top researcher who worked on both Alphabet’s DeepMind AI unit and at OpenAI.

ChatGPT is the first mainstream AI tool available, and Musk co-founded its parent company, OpenAI, in 2015.

However, since cutting ties with OpenAI, Musk has frequently criticized ChatGPT, citing it as an example of “training AI to be woke.”

“OpenAI was created as an open source (which is why I named it ‘Open’ AI), non-profit company to serve as a counterweight to Google,” he tweeted.

However, since then, “it has become a closed source, maximum-profit company effectively controlled by Microsoft. Not what I intended at all.”

Musk has previously warned about the dangers of the “unrestricted development” of AI and the detrimental effects it could have on humanity.

“One of the biggest risks to the future of civilization is AI. But AI is both positive or negative—it has great promise, great capability but also, with that comes great danger,” Musk explained.

“I think we need to regulate AI safety, frankly,” he said. “Think of any technology which is potentially a risk to people, like if it’s aircraft or cars or medicine, we have regulatory bodies that oversee the public safety of cars and planes and medicine.”

“I think we should have a similar set of regulatory oversight for artificial intelligence, because I think it is actually a bigger risk to society,” Musk concluded.

Movieguide® previously reported on ChatGPT:

The latest in AI technology is a chatbot called ChatGPT, which is reportedly the fastest-growing app in history, according to a new UBS study.

The chatbot from OpenAI had 13 million unique visitors per day in the month of January, in only its second month live.

“In 20 years following the internet space, we cannot recall a faster ramp in a consumer internet app,” USB’s analysts wrote in the study.

Mashable reported:

The study, which cites data from analytics company Similarweb(Opens in a new window), positions ChatGPT well over other fast-growing apps such as TikTok and Instagram. In comparison, it took nine months for TikTok to reach 100 million monthly active users; for Instagram, it took two and a half years.

Similar to other AI technology, ChatGPT has raised concerns for online safety and integrity, while also paving the way for quicker production and streamlining digital workflows.

Mashable reported:

ChatGPT has been immensely popular almost immediately after launch, with people using it for a wide variety of tasks, ranging from writing silly poems, to cheating in college essays, to having the bot write malware. Microsoft, who was a previous investor in OpenAI, recently invested an additional $10 billion into the company, and is said to be working on integrating ChatGPT into some of its services, including Bing(Opens in a new window). ChatGPT also caught the attention of Google, who is said to be developing several public-facing AI tools of its own(Opens in a new window).
