Former NFL Star Jarret Johnson Talks NFL’s ‘Different Level of Intensity’

By Movieguide® Contributor

Former NFL defensive end Jarret Johnson revealed what sets the NFL apart from college football.

For fans, the biggest difference is the speed of the game, but Johnson told Christian Huff on the “4:8 Men” podcast that it’s actually how”violent” the players are.

“I think the biggest difference other than the speed of the game is how guys can process mentally and then when they get there how violent the guys were,” Johnson said.

“You go from playing with boys, like they look like men, but they’re boys. You go to the NFL, and you’re backing up a dude or going up against a dude that’s 30 years old,” he added. “He’s got a family to feed. Dude, this guy’s life, man. He’s got an ex-wife with a couple kids. He’s got a mortgage. He bought his mama a house. You think you’re gonna stand in his way? Like, there’s just a different level of intensity.”

Another difference between the two is how long the NFL season is.

“You know the seasons are really long. It was 16 games when I played, and now [it’s] 17. It’s just a long season,” Johnson explained. “There are four preseason games, start of training camp in, you know, mid-July, and you don’t play your first preseason game until mid-August. It’s just a long season. And you might be finishing in February.”

Johnson played in the NFL for twelve consecutive seasons. He began his career with the Baltimore Ravens (2003-2011) as he was drafted in the fourth round of 2003 NFL Draft.

He also played for the then San Diego Chargers from 2012-2014.

During his second season, he played in all 16 games and recorded 30 total tackles.

Within that season, Johnson scored his first NFL touchdown as he intercepted the ball and ran for a pick-6 against the Miami Dolphins.

Movieguide® previously reported on Huff’s podcast:

On the “4:8 Men” podcast, former NFL Punter Steve Weatherford shared about his past struggles with addiction and self-doubt, revealing an experience that led him to a life-changing belief in God.

“My Wikipedia page looks amazing, right, but like what a lot of people don’t know is like during a lot of those highs, there were drug addictions, there were porn addictions, there was a lot of worthiness issues and a lot of self-hatred,” Weatherford said about his past.

Weatherford told Christian Huff on Huff’s podcast that when he was 11, he got saved at an alter call led by fitness enthusiast and pastor Keith Craft. Craft showed Weatherford that physical strength and a relationship with Jesus could go together. That prompted Weatherford to get involved in fitness, sports and eventually a career as an NFL player.
