By Movieguide® Contributor
Gary Sinise kicked off his first monthly AARP column with a reflection on his family and an appeal to readers to show appreciation for veterans on July 4th.
“This Fourth of July, I urge everyone to think about doing something a little extra for our veterans. Every American has a part to play. And while we can never do enough to show our gratitude to our nation’s defenders, I believe we can always do a little more,” Sinise said.
“Supporting our nation’s heroes is my lifelong mission and I will continue to serve it faithfully.”

This holiday season, Gary Sinise expressed his gratitude for America’s servicemen and women.
“Supporting our nation’s heroes is my lifelong mission and I will continue to serve it faithfully,” Sinise shared. “It’s an honor to be recognized and the best part is that I get to, in turn, shine a light and recognize the true heroes who serve our country.”
The FORREST GUMP previously received a nomination for The Movieguide® Grace Award for Most Inspiring Performance in Television in 2011 for his role in CSI: NY: “Indelible.”
Sinise recounts the legacy of service in his family. He expresses gratitude for his family’s many veterans, from his father, grandfather, and his uncle, to relatives he gained through marriage. These individual’s actions have greatly impacted him and helped inspire his mission to support America’s heroes.
“We can never do enough to support and honor our veterans, whose service, sacrifice and willingness to give their lives for something greater than themselves humbles me every day,” Sinise says. “On the Fourth of July this year — America’s 247th birthday — we celebrate our nation and the patriots who gave their all to make it great.”
On July 4th, Sinise’s band, the “Lt. Dan Band,” will perform in his hometown of Highland Park, Illinois. The city suffered a mass shooting on the same day last year.
“Sinise is set to perform with his band as his hometown commemorates Independence Day for the first time since a gunman shot more than 50 paradegoers, killing seven, at last year’s 4th of July parade,” Patch reports. “”His generosity and care for Highland Park mean so much to all of us,” says Highland Park’s mayor.
