After filming an entire season of SHIFITING GEARS with Tim Allen, Kat Dennings and Seann Williams Scott explained what it was like to work with the legendary actor, especially after meeting others actors in the past who were not as they seemed.

“I have learned through experience that you just never really know how someone’s going to be, especially when they have such a long-running career,” Dennings told PEOPLE. “Sometimes they’re exactly what you think, sometimes they’re the complete opposite.”

“[Allen] just has a blast,” she continued.

“He kind of reminds me of my dad, actually,” Scott added. “My dad passed away a while ago, you know, but even one of my brothers who loves the show sent me a text. He’s like, ‘Tim really reminds me of dad,’ and I was like, ‘Yeah, you know, it’s true. He does.’”

This realness from Allen certainly shines through on the screen as even when he portrays a character that has a mean side, his underlying care shines through. On SHIFTING GEARS, his love for his family is always evident, even if his character isn’t able to express it to his daughter and grandchildren all the time.

“I think the beauty of SHIFTING GEARS is it covers more than the average sitcom and dives deeper,” explained Maxwell Simkins, who plays one of Allen’s grandchildren on the show. “One of the best parts of a family is when they care so much. That’s an element that I feel Tim [Allen] brings to his character Matt — he cares so much, but he doesn’t know how to display it when Riley is talking about tracking and other things he can’t relate to.”

Audiences have connected to this focus on familial ties, making SHIFTING GEARS one of the hottest new comedies on TV. The humor of the show has also found a home, as highlighted by the reactions of the live-audience while the show is being filmed.

“The audiences we’ve had on SHIFTING GEARS I’ve never experienced anything [like] before. I know that they’re there to see Tim, and that’s the beauty of the whole thing. They are so raucous,” Dennings said. “They have to turn down the volume of the audience in these edits because they’re screaming and laughing and it’s almost like a sporting event. It’s really something…So this has been a real treat.”

ABC recently renewed SHIFTING GEARS for another season, allowing Allen and the cast to continue to promote family-friendly values through their show.
