Golden Globes Awards May Transition to Streaming

As the entertainment world continues to transition to online streaming platforms, the Golden Globes Awards may do the same.

Todd Boehly, CEO of Eldridge Industries, shared the plans with CNBC on Monday.

“I doubt we’ll be on NBC,” Boehly shared. “There’s a giant transition going on. Streaming is becoming part and parcel with where the world’s headed. The flexibility that we can do on a streaming environment is very different than what we can do on a broadcaster. So I think we’re going to take advantage of that flexibility.”

He also commented on the SAG-AFRA strike, hoping that it will end soon.

“We are absolutely excited to have the writers’ strike over, and we are hopeful that the actors strike is going to be resolved soon, because everyone wants to get back to business,” he said.

In June, the Golden Globes transferred from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association to Dick Clark Productions and Todd Boehly’s Eldridge.

Variety reported, “The new owners will use the assets and the cash on hand from the HFPA to establish the Golden Globe Foundation, which will continue on the HFPA’s tradition of charitable giving. The awards show itself and related assets will now be part of the for-profit operations of Dick Clark Productions, which has long been allied with the HFPA for the awards show.”

Boehly commented on the transition:

“My partners at DCP and I are grateful to Helen and team for their commitment to the successful implementation of a robust approach to governance, the expansion of the diverse and international voting body, implementing a professional, safe and accountable environment, and trusting new ownership with a new direction for the Globes.”

“As stewards of the Golden Globe Awards, our mission is to continue creating the most dynamic awards ceremony on live television viewed across the world,” said Jay Penske, CEO, chairman and founder of Penske Media and CEO of Dick Clark Productions. “We have a great team in place to grow this iconic brand and captivate new and existing audiences to celebrate the very best in television and motion pictures.”

The 81st annual Golden Globe Awards is scheduled for January 7, 2024.
