Grammy-award-winning Christian artist Mylon LeFevre has died at age 78 after a battle with cancer.
“My precious, strong and courageous husband laid hold of eternal life last night,” his wife Christi wrote in a Facebook post. “When we discussed heaven through the years, Mylon was most excited about receiving the soul winner’s crown. With his contemporary Christian rock band, Mylon and Broken Heart, he had the privilege of leading over 250,000 youth to Jesus. He cherished all the years of music ministry and the countless lives touched through his songs but his greatest joy was teaching the Word of God, especially through our broadcast, On the Road to Freedom.”
She continued, “Throughout the last years of this intense non-stop battle, never once did I hear him falter in his good confession of faith. In every broadcast and church service, many witnesses can attest to his bold declaration: JESUS IS MY HEALER. Until his very last breath he fought the good fight of faith. He finished his race. He kept the faith.”
LeFevre has been part of the music industry for decades. When he was just 17 years old, Elvis Presley recorded a song he wrote called “Without Him.” He went on to work with artists like George Harrison, Greg Allman, Little Richard and Eric Clapton.
In 1980, LeFevre gave his life to Christ and devoted himself to spreading God’s Word.
Many artists have taken to social media to express their sorrow at his passing and share LeFevre’s impact on them and their music.
In an Instagram video, Skillet’s John Cooper said, “I love Mylon. He was just a great friend to me and a great mentor to me in the last few years…Mylon deserves to be known and celebrated. He was such a Christian music hero, just a revolutionary for Christ — his testimony is unbelievable.”
Steven Curtis Chapman also shared a tribute to LeFevre, posting a video of himself performing “Without Him.”
“One of the first songs I remember singing with my family in church was a song called ‘Without Him,’ written by Mylon LeFevre when he was just 17 years old … and recorded by hundreds of artists including Elvis Presley,” Chapman wrote along with the video.
He continued, “I remember watching the tears in my dad’s eyes as we sang this song that meant so much to him because it was his and our whole family’s story, and it’s a message that has been woven into all my songs over the years…Without Him I could do nothing. Thank you for this song Mylon… And so thankful to know that you’re getting to sing it to Jesus now.”
