Country star-turned-pastor Granger Smith dove into the dangers and emptiness of the porn industry with Joshua Broome, a former porn star who’s now a pastor.

Broome worked in the porn industry for nearly seven years, saying he was essentially “sweet-talked” into it “as a young aspiring actor moving to LA.”

Growing up on food stamps and with only one pair of shoes, success meant money, and working in adult entertainment brought that in.

“I believed if I had a million dollars, every feeling of insecurity or feeling of worthlessness would just melt away, and I would just be healed miraculously because there was an additional comma in my bank account,” Broome told Smith. “Then I made that money, and guess what, nothing changed.”

Broome left the industry in 2013 and explained that for three months, he was in a “dark period.”

“There’s this three-month period of where I was struggling with suicidal ideation,” he revealed. “Like, there were people in my life that was dying left and right, and there was just like death swirling around me, and then I had this like crazy interaction at this bank and called my mom and just like high tailed it, you know, out of LA…it’s like I don’t want to have access to this place, you know, [or] anything that’s in it. I kind of tucked my tail between my legs and ran home to mama in North Carolina.”

Broome eventually had an encounter with God and gave up the porn industry to become a pastor. Now he spends his time speaking out against the deadly effects of porn.

“I will never forget that you said that. Over 40 people you knew in that industry are now dead, so much so that you said if you watch a porn today, there’s a really good chance especially the girl is dead from suicide,” Smith said.

“That’s what’s so twisted about it,” Broome responded, “is like in the porn industry when someone dies that way, they make a compilation of all their scenes and they try to monetize the thing in which that caused their demise.”

Because he’s experienced so much darkness, Broome wants to share the hope he has in Christ all the more.

“When I have the opportunity to share my story, I want to paint a picture of someone who had everything they thought would fix their life and then met the darkness of what happens when it doesn’t work,” Broome wrote on Instagram about his opportunity to speak on the “Shawn Ryan Podcast.” “In that place, we realize our hearts are desperate for something we cannot provide ourselves.”

“It is Jesus we long for. It is a relationship with Jesus Christ that we need most. And it is by Him and through Him that I am the man I am today,” he continued. “I pray that God continues to use me as a vessel and a mouthpiece — to call people out of darkness and into His marvelous light, and to play a small part in taking back territory from the enemy.

Broome also wrote a book called 7 Lies That Will Ruin Your Life: What My Journey from Porn Star to Preacher Taught Me About the Truth That Sets Us Free.

The book “pairs my personal experiences with Biblical truths, demonstrating both  how we can be deceived and the healing truth that comes when we realize that Jesus really is enough,” he described.

Broome was once headed down a path of destruction but found that only Jesus could take away his fears and make his insecurities fade away. Like him, we too can find our rest and security in Christ.
