Kirk Cameron Says ‘Everything Changed’ After He Found Faith

By Movieguide® Contributor

Kirk Cameron is sharing his faith journey and how one prayer brought him to the Lord.

“I was an atheist,” Cameron told TBN of his younger self. “I think I would’ve said, ‘There’s no evidence for God! I don’t believe in God!’”

He continued, “It wasn’t until I was about 17 years old that somebody took me to church, and I heard a message from a preacher. And I didn’t believe what he was saying, but he did. He was speaking with passion…and guess who the preacher was? Chuck Swindal.”

Cameron left the service feeling more curious about God and went to the father of a friend to talk about proof of God’s existence. His friend’s father told him, “Talk to [God], ask him. But you’ve got to come to him on his terms: humility and faith.”

“I remember praying for the first time and saying, ‘God, if you’re there, I want to know if you’re real. Would you show me? Would you forgive me for the wrong things I’ve done? Would you make me the man you created me to be?’ he recalled. “I had this sense when I finished that perhaps I just spoke to the God of the universe and maybe he would answer me.”

Cameron said, “He was so kind to do more than that. He changed me on the inside, and I began going to church and somebody gave me a Bible, and I began to follow Jesus as the Lord of my life, and everything changed from that point on.”

Movieguide® previously reported on Cameron’s faith journey:

While on the set of the TV show, GROWING PAINS, Cameron said that he was fed “ego-inflating information that I could be the god of my own world, the master of my own destiny.”

“I thought that religion was something people made up so they would stop doing bad things,” Cameron said.

Finally, Cameron found himself in his sports car with the decision to make. He knew he didn’t have forever to wait and knew that if heaven was real, he would not be going there…

“The most important decision I could ever make would be to humble myself and trust Jesus Christ as the Lord of my life—to rely and depend upon him like I do with the air that I breathe and trust God’s word to guide me into the future,” Cameron said.

“Nothing compares to the joy of knowing Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior,” Cameron concluded.

Speaking about his faith journey to Creation.com, Cameron explained that he often shares his testimony with others.

“I tend to stick to the principle of speaking the truth in love. I fall back on sincerity all the time,” he said. “Your personal testimony often speaks volumes. It’s my faith in the Word of God and the faithfulness of God that resulted in me being married to the same woman for 25 years, which is something like 250 in ‘Hollywood years’, and living like we do with six kids, and being able to work on things that I’m passionate about.”

One of those projects he is passionate about is the new children’s show ADVENTURES WITH IGGY AND MR. KIRK.

“Christian parents today struggle to find quality content that reflects their values and captures the attention of modern-day kids,” he said in a press release about the show. “Our show aims to bridge that gap by providing entertainment that is both wholesome and engaging.”
