LILO & STITCH swims to even more success as the new live-action remake lands among the 100 highest-grossing movies ever made.
Since its release on May 23, the film has earned $371 million domestically and $864 million globally.
It’s on track to potentially be the first $1 billion hit since MOANA 2. Globally, it already surpassed 2018 BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER and the 2022 BATMAN film.
The film hit the $800 million mark after its fourth weekend. Since the movie cost $100 million to make, it already scored a profit. If it surpasses the $1 billion mark, it will be among the top 50 highest-grossing movies ever.
It’s success isn’t surprising, as family and redemptive themes take centerstage. Movieguide®’s review of LILO & STITCH reads:
LILO & STITCH is a live-action remake of the 2002 animated science fiction comedy. Lilo is a sad, lonely and sometimes angry 6-year-old orphaned girl in Hawaii. Her parents died, so her older adult sister tries to take care of her. Lilo prays for a friend and finds a small, escaped alien creature whose spaceship crashed on Earth and pretends to be a dog. Lilo takes him home and renames him Stitch, but Stitch causes all sorts of trouble for Lilo and her sister. Meanwhile, the Galactic Federation sends two bumbling aliens to capture Stitch and return him.
The live action LILO & STITCH is lots of fun, with touching moments of rescue and redemption. Sometimes, however, the comical action is awkwardly shot. Eventually, Lilo’s love and devotion change Stitch’s heart, allowing him to feel love and want to be part of her family. Lilo won’t quit loving Stitch no matter how much trouble he causes. The live action LILO & STITCH has lots of comical action violence, however, and very brief light foul language. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for younger children.
The comments section of a clip from the movie posted to Disney’s Instagram makes it clear that fans old and young are excited about the movie.
One fan said, “This has just become my new all-time most favorite movie!!!😍 100/100 masterpiece!!! 👽🛸💙.” Another person added, “This was the BEST Disney movie in years.”
The live-action film also surpassed the original animated version, which only grossed $275 million worldwide.
The original movie received a similar rating from Movieguide®, which said, “LILO & STITCH extols love, perseverance, commitment, faith, family, and redemption. Some action violence and references to evolution and voodoo make the movie inappropriate for younger children.”
On the movie’s successful opening weekend, President and CEO of Cinema United Michael O’Leary said, “Millions of moviegoers this holiday weekend proved once again that going to the cinema is a true American pastime. Records aside, it’s clear that movie theaters are cultural and economic hubs in cities and towns of all sizes, uniting communities across the country in the singular thrill of seeing a movie on the big screen. This weekend is just the start of what will be a great summer for movie fans around the world.”
LILO & STITCH will likely remain in theaters for several more weeks before becoming available on streaming.
