Olympian Sydney McLaughlin Announces Engagement: ‘This Union Will Impact Lives for His Kingdom’

After breaking world records and winning Gold medals at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, US track and field star Sydney McLaughlin made a special announcement on Instagram.

She’s engaged!

McLaughlin announced on Instagram after her now fiance, Andre Levrone Jr., proposed.

“Dear future husband,” she wrote on Instagram. “Till this day I still can’t comprehend how someone who possesses everything I’ve prayed for, has finally come into my life. Our growth together exceeds what the dates on a calendar show. I fall in love with you more and more each day off of the strength of your faith. Andre, you are the most God-fearing, passionate, honest, loving, hard working, protective, and genuine man I’ve ever met.”

McLaughlin, an outspoken Christian who has used her platform to point people to Christ, said that Jesus is at the center of their relationship.

“I see Jesus in you. And as a result it makes you so easy to love. I truly did not know the definition of love until I met you; a sacrificial choice to lay down your life for the well being of another,” she wrote. “With that being said, there is no one I’d rather lay down my life for. The calling God has on our lives goes far beyond our love for one another. This union will impact lives for His kingdom, and that’s what excites me most. I have no fear. I will keep my eyes on you, as you keep your eyes on Him. You’re the perfect man to lead me, and I cannot wait to follow.”

McLaughlin concluded by quoting Proverbs 18:22, which reads: “He who finds a wife finds what is good and receives favor from the Lord.”

Andre Lecrone Jr. also expressed his excitement about his future with McLaughlin.

“May we never love one another cautiously, but instead always be eager to love one another extravagantly, in the manner that Christ loved the Church,” he wrote on Instagram, quoting Song of Songs 8:5, which reads: “Who is this coming up from the wilderness, leaning on the one she loves?….”

McLaughlin recently shared how the pressures of fame have tested and strengthened her faith.

Despite McLaughlin’s confession of not understanding why past teammates and even family did not respect her, she said it is comforting to know that her identity is in Christ and not human approval.

“I am so grateful that I have a relationship with God in the way that I do because without it I think I would be going crazy right now,” she said. “I could do nothing, to so many people, and that offends them. I can post everything right, I can say everything right, I can do everything right, I can mind my business, and it offends people.

“I’m so grateful I don’t live for the approval of people anymore, because moments like this would have me down for about three weeks, of not understanding why some of my family, why some of my closest friends aren’t more happy for me in this moment,” she continued. “Why people that you thought were your supporters are finding ways to throw shots at you… can never just have a moment to celebrate and breathe. But I am so grateful I don’t live for that anymore, because if I did my tank would be so empty.”

McLaughlin also encouraged those listening that true peace and rest are only found in Jesus.

“Humans, we were not made to carry so much weight,” she explained. “We were not made to carry so much attention on us, we were not made to be famous. That was never what God intended for us guys, ever. The only person who is strongest to carry that is Jesus.”
